Y&R casts 80s soap hunk Frank Runyeon in heavenly role

The former daytime heartthrob will be visiting Genoa City in a spiritual form.

The Young and the Restless is bringing an angel to the canvas, and the CBS soap has cast former daytime star Frank Runyeon in the ethereal role.

The Ohio native, who's known to the soap opera community as All My Children's Forrest Williams, As the World Turns' Steve Andropoulos, and Santa Barbara's Michael Donnelly, will be playing the character -- aptly named Angel -- beginning Thursday, May 28, TV Insider reports.

Y&R is currently keeping mum on the details of the role, including whether or not having an angel on the canvas means another character could be dying. Either way, Runyeon tells the publication that it seems some very mysterious powers were at play when he was offered the role. "Before I went into acting, I was a religion major, so the spiritual has always been there in my life and my work," he says.

Of course, it doesn't hurt that the actor sports some serious hair, which gives him an angel-esque look. "Apparently, they were looking for a guy who looks sort of Biblical and [head writer Charles Pratt Jr.] thought of me. I mean, who else is so stupid they'll walk around with a beard and long hair looking for a job in Hollywood? Me!" he jokes. "And it's such an interesting thing to play an angel. I mean, how do you do that exactly? There are no rules, so I just sort of winged it. Hey, if [former NBC/CBS/ABC Daytime exec] Brian Frons could play God on Santa Barbara, I can certainly do this!"
