Shocker: David Tom out, Y&R recasts Billy

The Young and the Restless has made the surprising decision to recast the role of Billy Abbott. David Tom, who returned to the show earlier this year, is out, and will be replaced by a daytime newcomer.

Just four months into his daytime return, The Young and the Restless has decided to part ways with Emmy-winning actor David Tom. The CBS soap has reportedly made the decision to take the character of Billy Abbott in a difference direction. Tom will be replaced by daytime newcomer Burgess Jenkins.

"So excited to be joining the Y&R family!" Jenkins wrote on Twitter. "Thanks so much for the outpouring of warm welcome from all the fans!"

Tom originally played the role of Billy from 1999 to 2002 and picked up an Outstanding Younger Actor trophy at the Daytime Emmys in 2000. He was brought back to Y&R earlier this year after fan favorite Billy J. Miller opted to leave the show. Tom also enjoyed a short run as bad boy Paul Cramer on One Life to Live.

Jenkins, meanwhile, joins The Young and the Restless after having guest spots on primetime soaps Army Wives, Nashville, and One Tree Hill.

Jenkins is expected to first air in late June.

"I'll miss U so much," Tom's co-star Melody Thomas Scott (Nikki Newman) shared on Twitter. "Don't let it get u down. U R a fabulous actor, friend & U R my family. Ur talent will take U where U belong."

CBS has yet to officially comment on the role recast. News of Jenkins' hiring was first reported by Daytime Confidential.
