Some news about Stuart Fails to Save the Universe is finally here!

The newest project from The Big Bang Theory creator Chuck Lorre, is gearing up to be more than just an unusual ‘spin-off’—it’s on its way to set its own mark within the franchise.

But as fans get ready to return to Stuart Bloom’s quirky world, one question remains: Will any of the original cast/characters join him in this new adventure of his?

However, as Channing Dungey puts it;

"I would never say never..."

Will the original nerds return?

If there is one question on every long-time fan’s mind and tongue, it is: Would the original characters from The Big Bang Theory make surprise guest appearances in Stuart Fails to Save the Universe?

While Channing Dungey didn’t give out any firm affirmations regarding the same, she did leave the door open—just a bit. She says;

“I would never say never…”

Kaley Cuoco, who played Penny, has already articulated her attraction towards coming back to the role but only if a good opportunity is presented to her character.

And with the spin-off obviously delving into acquainted territory, the idea of a Sheldon or a Leonard or a Penny cameo doesn’t seem completely out of reach.

However, Dungey was fast when she shifted the focus back to Stuart Fails to Save the Universe and its team. She says;

“We’re very excited and focused on our series regulars who have great stuff to do in these episodes…”

The indications from such answers being thrown out have a clear intent: Stuart Fails to Save the Universe isn’t depending on sentimental values and nostalgia to have a successful show.

Unlike previous spin-offs like Young Sheldon or Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage, which were curated around pre-established characters with already developed strong viewer familiarity held to their advantage, this spin-off shapes up right from scratch.

Stuart, after all, was never a main character in the original series—but here is where the intrigue about his character lies. His character offers new humour to play with, freed by the already existing arcs and of the original crew.

Still, if the show does end up becoming a success, the chances of a few surprise cameos might end up growing stronger.

The absence of the main cast, at least at first, might let Stuart Fails to Save the Universe simmer and allow Stuart to finally be a character of his own without the influence of the others.

A standalone venture—with some familiar echoes in Stuart Fails to Save the Universe

While Stuart Fails to Save the Universe is still crawling its way forward, some of the behind-the-scenes talks are moving fast.

The series has already had a table read with key returning cast members like Kevin Sussman (as Stuart), Lauren Lapkus (as Denise), John Ross Bowie (as Barry Kripke), and Brian Posehn (as Bert).

The script is penned by Bill Prady, Zak Penn, and Lorre.

Channing Dungey, who is the Warner Bros. Television Chairperson and CEO, also seems quite positive about the project’s route. In an interview with Deadline, Dungey says;

“Chuck, Zak, and Bill are hard at work writing stuff…We’ve seen some material at the studio, and we’ve had some creative conversations with Max, so we are hopeful for good news soon.”

Although Stuart Fails to Save the Universe clearly upholds the gene of its forerunner, it’s intended to stand on its own two feet.

This spin-off is in no way a direct continuation of The Big Bang Theory but rather an attempt to spread out the universe through the lens of one of its most low-key characters.

Dungey, who’s had direct access to the scripts written early on, said;

“They are creative, they are imaginative, and they are, most importantly, very, very funny.”

The show leans into Stuart’s type of humor, giving him space to shine without being outshined by Sheldon’s soundness or Leonard’s complexities. And while the new series does include returning ‘side characters, ’ their dynamics and chemistry are likely to progress and advance up far beyond their primary roles in the original sitcom.

For now, Stuart Fails to Save the Universe is keeping its cards undisclosed.

With a table reads that took place and the creative team clocked in, one thing is certain: the show is indeed picking up the pace.

However, as of now, other familiar faces from the original The Big Bang Theory aren’t happening anytime soon, but as Dungey puts it, “Never says never…”
