The Sandman Season 2 is arriving on the screens after a long wait of three years. However, fans are a little disappointed to know that they would get to watch Lord Morpheus for the final time on television, as the show will not be returning with Season 3.
Netflix announced the decision to end the superhero series after the second season earlier this year. The move came as a surprise, as the show had earned both critical acclaim and the audience’s love.
So why is The Sandman not getting a Season 3? Series co-creator David S. Goyer revealed that it was a creative decision to conclude the show with a Season 2. Meanwhile, the exorbitant budget of the show and multiple allegations against comic book writer Neil Gaiman were also said to have driven the development.
Why is The Sandman ending after Season 2?
In January 2025, Netflix confirmed that the second season of The Sandman will be its last. At the time, showrunner Allan Heinberg revealed that when the team analyzed the DC Comics, they felt that only one more season would be enough to tell the story of Dream. He wrote on X at the time:
“The series has always been focused exclusively on Dream’s story, and back in 2022, when we looked at the remaining Dream material from the comics, we knew we only had enough story for one more season.”
However, reports also came out that s*xual assault allegations against author Neil Gaiman could be the reason behind The Sandman’s early end. In July 2024, multiple women accused Gaiman, on whose comic books the show is based, of assault.
In June 2025, series co-creator David S. Goyer opened up about the allegations and said they had envisioned The Sandman Season 2 as the final chapter ever before the Gaiman controversy happened. He said in an interview with Variety:
“And even when the accusations first came out, I think we were three weeks from finishing filming Season 2 — so we were very, very far down the path and Neil wasn’t as involved in Season 2 as he was in Season 1.”
Instead, Goyer said that the decision to end the show was purely creative, as they felt that the rest of the source material lacked Dream’s involvement, the show's protagonist:
“One of the concerns about some of the story arcs is that Dream isn’t in them very much and so when we were discussing, everyone’s concern was like, are we really going to sort of deviate and do six episodes that Dream’s not in at all, except for the very end?”
Another likely reason behind the show’s conclusion is that it is an expensive project for Netflix and the producers. For season 1, the show had a budget of $15 million per episode. The visual spectacle and the extensive CGI make the series a costly affair, and it might not have been commercially viable for Netflix to continue it beyond the second season.
The Sandman Season 2 concludes the journey of Lord Morpheus, the ruler of Dreaming, who is on a mission to bring order to the realm after being held captive for more than a century. The series stars Tom Sturridge in the lead, along with Vivienne Acheampong as Lucienne and Patton Oswalt as the voice of Matthew the Raven.
The Sandman Season 2 premieres on Netflix on July 3, 2025.
