The Sandman Season 2 Part 1, consisting of 6 episodes, premiered on July 3, 2025, on Netflix and raised the stakes for the Endless. Based on the comic book series of the same name by Neil Gaiman, the official synopsis of the show, as per Rotten Tomatoes, mentions,

“When the Sandman, aka Dream, the cosmic being who controls all dreams, is captured and held prisoner for more than a century, he must journey across different worlds and timelines to fix the chaos his absence has caused.”

While a part of The Sandman is essentially the story of Dream, his siblings, also known as the Endless, are equally important entities in the comics as well as in the series. The Endless are siblings, and though they are not exactly gods, they are something much more than that.

Consisting of Destiny, Dream, Death, Destruction, Despair, Desire, and Delirium, these entities are what they represent. The Sandman portrays them as the personifications of these core and fundamental emotions and truths that they represent, and that is what makes them so important.

The Endless are an integral part of The Sandman

The fact that the Endless in The Sandman are flesh and blood is what makes the story go beyond a piece of timeless fantasy. They not only embody the basic human qualities and truths of existence, but they also personify them. In The Sandman Season 2, they become even more important because of the fact that while they are meant to remain unchanged, it is shown that circumstances and situations force them to change as well.

The change of the Endless means massive consequences, and that is one of the key aspects of season 2. Moreover, since Dream has always struggled with the idea of change, this season also follows how he deals with it. The Endless also become vital in terms of storytelling, as when Destruction goes missing, all the siblings have to come together to find him.

This season also sees Destiny, Delirium, and Destruction come to the forefront, which highlights the sibling dynamic that lies at the core of the Endless. They are metaphors, but they are also humans with mortal flaws and qualities.

As Dream tries to make up for his past mistakes and the siblings come together to find the one lost, the Endless become so much more than the embodiment of human existence; they become the driving force of the second season, which further delves into their origins and characteristics and why they behave the way they do.

The Sandman Season 2, with its focus on the Endless, has set the stage for more high-stakes drama involving Dream as he is on the quest to save the universe and also find Destruction.

The Sandman can be streamed on Netflix.
