Netflix's The Sandman, the fantasy series based on Neil Gaiman's comics, kicked off with its second season and dropped Volume 1 on July 3, 2025.
The sophomore season of the beloved series saw the return of the Endless beings as they gathered together to look for their missing sibling, Destruction.
But before that, Morpheus/Dream had a difficult task at hand, which was to rebuild his Dreaming after it was destroyed by the Furies, which also included reshaping a new castle for himself.
This destruction of his Dreaming realm was triggered by the actions of Hippolyta, the only daughter of Wonder Woman. After the Furies manipulated Hippolyta into believing that Dream had abducted her infant son, Daniel, she became hell-bent on his destruction.
In The Sandman, Hippolyta's son ended up becoming the most important part of Dream's journey, as before his death, Morpheus transferred his essence into Daniel and made him the New Dream King. After Morpheus' death, Hippolyta's son became the new Dream of the Endless, embodying the same powers as Dream.
More on this in our story.
How did Hippolyta become a crucial aspect of Dream's journey in The Sandman?
After Morpheus freed himself from prison, his Dreaming was an altogether different realm than he had left. Firstly, he punished the errant dreams for dispatching Hector's soul to his wife and banished them for mixing up the dead with the living.
While he sent Hector's soul to his rightful place and promised to send Hippolyta to the waking world, Dream's decision to claim their baby changed his fate in The Sandman.
While Dream provided justice to Hippolyta, he claimed that since her baby was formed in the Dreaming, it belonged there, and he would surely return one day to claim it.
Dream's warning changed Hippolyta forever in The Sandman, and she grew into an anxious woman, always taking care of her newborn son, until it was taken away from her by Loki.
However, the Furies saw this as an opportunity and visited Hippolyta in her dreams and blamed Dream for the child's abduction, making Lyta mad with vengeance.
With the Furies' blessings, Hippolyta became hellbent on taking revenge on Dream and went on a destruction spree of his Dreaming. However, when she found her son alive and well with Dream, she asked the Furies to call off their plan to kill Dream.
Knowing that revenge for a blood debt can't be reversed, Dream hatched a plan to transfer his essence into Daniel, Hippolyta's son.
Hippolyta's mortal son became Dream's incarnation in The Sandman Season 2
Knowing that his Dreaming's destruction is inevitable in The Sandman Season 2, Dream knew that the only way to save his realm was to destroy himself, and he chose Hippolyta's son to transfer his essence to.
While the Furies were planning to destroy the Dreaming, Dream spoke with young Daniel and bequeathed him the emerald dreamstone before the death of his incumbent aspect. This created a new Dream (who was not Morpheus), but Hippolyta's son, Daniel.
In The Sandman Season 2, Hippolyta reunited with her son at Dream's wake, but her infant son was not mortal anymore and had become the new Dream King. While Daniel (who had become the new Dream King) forgave his mother for bringing destruction upon Dreaming, Hippolyta went into profound depression.
She was later reunited with a reincarnated Hector, who was taken to the Dreaming for eternity by their mortal son, turned into the new Dream King.
