Who was Timothy Dalton in 1923? Character arc and storyline explored

Taylor Sheridan's Yellowstone franchise featured many villains, but none like 1923's Donald Whitfield, played by British actor Timothy Dalton.

While Jacob and Cara had to survive a harsh Montana winter, Prohibition, the Great Depression, and many other brutalities of the titular period, Whitfield's evilness still stands out.

Introduced in Season 1, Episode 4, Dalton's Whitfield is a powerful and wealthy mining tycoon who has his eyes set on Paradise Valley and wants to convert the Duttons' natural land into a monetary business opportunity.

As a man, Whitfield is sadistic in nature, ripped away of every empathy, and enjoys torturing and manipulating people.

Timothy Dalton's Donald Whitfield is a sadistic villain in 1923

While the Duttons dealt with many villains in every time period, from 1883 to Yellowstone, Donald Whitfield is simply the evilest and most treachrous one. While he had a recurring presence in Season 1, his evil ways know no bounds in Season 2, and his evil presence is immediately known in the sophomore season.

While the Duttons want to preserve their family legacy and keep the ranch in its authentic way, Whitfield sees the Paradise Valley as an opportunity to do great business. Being a businessman, he sees every thing as an opportunity to expand, even if it comes at a cost.

In 1923 Season 2, Whitfield aptly recognised the potential in the ski industry when he saw some mine workers skiing in their free time. When Whitfield expresses his desire to build a highway and a ski resort in Paradise Valley, as people would need to unwind after a day's work, Banner recognises that the villain is capable of seeing through every human vulnerability and turning it into his monetary gain.

In addition to being the primary villain to Jacob and Cara, Whitfield is a sadistic man by nature who likes seeing his s*x workers torture and whip each other for fun. He takes immense pleasure in seeing Christy and Linda 'play' with each other. The many brutal r*pe scenes in 1923 Season 2 highlight Whitfield's attempts to r*pe Montana of its natural and beautiful land.

What other roles has 1923 star Timothy Dalton played in his career so far?

Albeit his villainous character in the spin-off series, Timothy Dalton is an established actor who has played roles throughout his career.

While he started with theatre and later debuted in feature films, he got International recognition after playing secret agent James Bond in 1987. He was the fourth actor to play the popular character in The Living Daylights (1987) and Licence to Kill (1989).

He is also known for taking up roles in many period dramas and movies, including Cromwell, Mary, Queen of Scots, Jane Eyre, and Wuthering Heights.

His other famous projects on the small screen include Netflix's The Crown, Penny Dreadful, Toy Story of Terror!, Toy Story That Time Forgot, Doctor Who, and Scarlett.

His current role as Whitfield is being highly praised and adds much-needed depth to the show. It would be interesting to see how he will lose against the Duttons in the upcoming 1923 Season 2 finale.
