Lisa Parsons is a bride hosting her wedding on The Odyssey in Doctor Odyssey Season 1 Episode 6, I Always Cry at Weddings. Lisa is introduced as a high-maintenance bride, who gets upset at the start over the peonies in the guest rooms not filling the air with fragrance.
She is also frustrated when her mom, Ellen, played by Margo Martindale, misses the welcome dinner because of a sunburn caused by laying out with baby oil after taking antibiotics. While Lisa tries to keep up appearances, things do not go as smoothly and she gets stressed and infuriated over small matters.
Throughout the episode, Lisa struggles with medical issues. She overdoses on a weight-loss medication to fit into her wedding dress and develops a severe rash. While treating her, Avery hints that Lisa should listen to her instincts and rethink the wedding.
However, Lisa snaps back and refuses to face the truth about her relationship. Meanwhile, her fiancé, Eric, played by Hudson Oz, deals with mental health struggles. He consults Max the night before the wedding about a rash, which turns out to be a rare type of ringworm.
During their conversation, Eric admits he is a sex addict. While Max tries to help him, Eric gets overwhelmed and jumps off the ship, killing himself. The next morning, the crew breaks the devastating news to everyone, leaving Lisa heartbroken.
Lisa also reflects on how she pressured Eric to live up to her vision of the perfect husband. Lisa and Eric’s story inspires Max, Avery, and Tristan to live life to the fullest and create a bucket list. The three end up having a threesome to fulfill a wish on their bucket lists, which comes as a surprise for the audience.
Lisa’s story, combined with strong performances from Ballerini, makes I Always Cry at Weddings a standout episode. The episode is not only full of twists and surprises but also explores the importance of empathy and the consequences of ignoring mental health struggles.
Kelsea Ballerini said it was an honor to appear in Doctor Odyssey
In an interview with ABC7, Kelsea Ballerini opened up about making her acting debut with Doctor Odyssey, revealing that she has always been a fan of series co-creator Ryan Murphy. She said:
“I was asked to play this role, and it was such an honor because I'm such a Ryan Murphy fan. And this character that I play, she is doing her best and she is stressed out.”
“And all I can tell you is that, quite literally, my entryway into acting was screaming and crying and throwing up for two weeks on set on camera. So, you're welcome everybody, sorry."
Ballerini has received multiple Grammy nominations in her career and is known for her hit songs like Love Me Like You Mean It, Peter Pan, Half of My Hometown, Cowboys Cry Too, Miss Me More, and I Quit Drinking.
Doctor Odyssey airs new episodes on ABC on Thursdays and is available to stream on Hulu.
