Matthew Clairmont, played by Matthew Goode (The Imitation Game, Abigail, Chasing Liberty, Freud’s Last Session, Stoker) is a key character in A Discovery of Witches. He is depicted as a vampire who falls in love with a witch named Diana Bishop.
A Discovery of Witches, adapted from the All Souls Trilogy revolves around Diana Bishop (Teresa Palmer). She lives under the disguise of an American Historian who is a tenured professor of History of Science at Yale. She is an alchemy researcher at the Bodleian Library in Oxford.
However, what people don’t know about her is that she is a witch and she wishes to forget that about herself. Despite being a powerful wielder of magic, she is completely untrained because of her desire to distance herself from anything supernatural.
Like every epic story that begins with an unwilling hero, Diana soon realizes that she cannot run from herself. She must embrace what she is and fight the deadly challenges that await her. In the process, she must befriend other creatures.
What is Matthew Clairmont's story in A Discovery of Witches?
Matthew Clairmont is a brilliant professor of Genetics at the same university as Diana who also has a secret that’s unknown to the world. Beyond his charming youthful personality, he is a millennia-old vampire belonging to the de Clermont clan.
He first meets Diana while searching for the Book of Life, a very old manuscript that has been lost for centuries. Their first meeting is tense and electrifying and it is impossible to not see the underlying chemistry that they have.
However, Mathew is a very complex character with a lot of contradictory feelings and emotions. He is a lot of things, a poet, a scientist, a spy, an assassin, a warrior, and above all, someone who has been living for a long, long time.
Despite being a vampire, he has human-like vulnerabilities. He has anger issues, and his personality is arrogant at times. He also seeks redemption and forgiveness, something which brings him very close to being human.
What happens to Diana and Matthew in A Discovery of Witches?
The finale of A Discovery of Witches has Diana discovering Matthew’s real identity which brings them closer. With the help of Baldwin (Peter McDonald), Diana realizes that Matthew is being tortured by Benjamin (Jacob Ifan) in the same way that Phillipe (James Purefoy) was torturing him during World War II.
Diana and her friends then travel to Poland where she finds a battered Matthew who turns out to be just an enhancement, which causes her to the battle alone. When she discovers that her opponent is Satu (Malin Buska), she easily takes her powers by binding her.
Then the Book of Life reveals that daemon DNA is the key to everything. Since both Matthew and Diana have daemon DNA, it sparks a blood rage. It is also revealed that the recession of the DNA is the reason behind the declining power and lifespan of the vampires and witches.
Diana then goes on to defend her actions and argue against the Covenant at the Congregation. She argues that humans need to get out of their prejudices and mingle with witches, vampires, and daemons as they are all related to each other.
Much to everyone’s relief, the Congregation votes in favor of Diana and abolishes the Covenant. The final shot shows Mathew and Diana dancing in Sept Tours, surrounded by friends and family.
