Retired lawyer Madeline Kingston, aka 'Matty Matlock' joins a new law firm to earn 'some money' and raise her grandchild. She soon takes on cases as a criminal lawyer at the firm and also strikes a friendship with her co-workers.
While Matty appears to be just another granny trying to earn some money to raise her family, she is a woman on a mission. She believes that the law firm is responsible for the opioid epidemic that resulted in her daughter Ellie's death.
The show subverts gender roles very subtly when Matty realizes that the world pays little attention to women while talking about business, because it does not consider them a threat or intelligent enough to misuse any information.
Matty uses this gender misconception in her favor and tries to uncover information by overhearing her co-workers' conversations, who talk freely around her.
While Matty needs to gather enough evidence to prove the firm's involvement in the opioid epidemic, she must first win her co-workers' trust and win cases for them with her intellect.
