Season 2 of HBO's Emmy-winning post-apocalyptic series, The Last of Us, was released on April 13, 2025. The series follows the journey of Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey), a teen with a strange immunity, against the zombies infected with the fungus Cordyceps in the post-apocalyptic U.S.
The Last of Us Season 2, Episode 1, titled Future Days, introduces the viewers to Joel and Ellie's life in Jackson, five years after the intense finale of the debut season. Located to the west of the Yellowstone River, Jackson is a walled and protected town in Jackson County, Wyoming, where Joel and Ellie has taken refuge in their intense journey across the zombie-infected U.S. Interestingly, the set of the protected town of Jackson was built in Minaty Bay, South of the Britannia Beach in Canada.

After escaping from the Fireflies' headquarters, Joel and Ellie meet an indigenous couple, Florence and Marlon, who warn of the dangers of the West. However, Joel and Ellie continue their journey and finally reach the small town of Jackson.
Jackson is a self-sustaining, fortified community built around a hydroelectric dam, well protected and secluded from the cordyceps-infected parts of the U.S. It's a well-organized society based on communal living where people tend to live a normal life, celebrating festivals, raising children and maintaining defenses — a stark contrast to the chaos outside it. The small town of Jackson symbolizes hope and a place of safety amidst the chaos, infection, and deaths.
Jackson serves as a safe haven not only from the fungus-infected zombies but also the fascist FEDRA members. With Abby and her allies reaching the outskirts of Jackson to seek revenge against Joel, is the town safe anymore? And with the Cordyceps in the Jackson water pipes, can Jackson protect its inhabitants from the infection? These are some questions Season 2 might address.
What happened in Jackson in The Last of Us Season 2 Episode 1?
The small town of Jackson was previously an abandoned location that was rebuilt by Maria (Rutina Welsey) and the group of uninfected people. Slowly, the town became a self-sustained and protected community.
A few years down the line, Tommy (Gabriel Luna), Joel's brother, joined the community and eventually married Maria. The town slowly became a replica of the real world from the pre-apocalypse era, with a governing council, schools, medical centers, religious institutions, and more.
The Last Of Us Season 2 opened with Ellie and Joel living in the fortified town of Jackson, Wyoming. However, the relationship between the adoptive father and her daughter has reached rock bottom; Ellie, now a young adult, has moved out of Joel's place and started to live in a garage next to his house.
Further, she, her best friend Dina, and her boyfriend Jesse have built a group to protect the inhabitants of Jackson from the zombies and the infection. Similarly, Joel has also decided to seek help from a therapist to gain Ellie's trust back.
In the premiere episode of The Last of Us Season 2, the viewers come to know about the threat looming on Jackson. In the episode, we see Ellie preparing for the upcoming combat. So, when Tommy prevents Ellie and her group from patrolling the town, she remains adamant about the situation, thus changing Tommy's decision.
Ellie and Dina find an abandoned supermarket, which suddenly collapses, knocking Ellie down to the basement, where she encounters an infected person. However, she escapes the situation with her friends. The closing moments of the episode show the pipes moving involuntarily, suggesting a possible outbreak in Jackson.
Meanwhile, this also serves as a sign that Abby and her allies are not far away from Jackson. Abby, who is adamant about tracking down and killing Joel, has thus reached the outskirts of the town in Wyoming.
