While the Front Man was always conceived as the main antagonist in Hwang Dong-hyuk's Squid Game, another worthy contender rose to the occasion in the final chapter, who was none other than Lee Myung-gi (Player 333).
In contrast to his typical Korean boyish looks, actor Yim Si-wan debuted as the deceitful Myung-gi (Player 333) in Squid Game Season 2, who chanced upon his pregnant ex-girlfriend in the game.
While Myung-gi had many chances to correct his past mistakes and choose protection (of Jun-hee and their unborn baby) instead of survival, he was never really up for the task.
Emerging as the most hated character after the season 3 finale, where he threatened to throw his newborn baby from the tower to win the competition, Myung-gi ultimately succumbed to his death.
Si-wan also shares his fans' hate for Myung-gi as he discussed with The Hollywood Reporter:
''I still didn’t really have full conviction or understanding of what kind of character Myung-gi is, even until that very last point. All the way up until then, I was always questioning his motives and what kind of character he is deep down.''
More on this in our story.
Yim Si-wan breaks down his character (Player 333) in Squid Game
While the fans are mourning the deaths of all of their favorite players (including Player 456) after Squid Game Season 3, Myung-gi is not one of them.
The deceitful and swindling cryptocurrency influencer was given multiple chances at redemption and to own up to the responsibility for his ex-girlfriend and their unborn child, but he stayed disloyal and a greedy human being till his final breath in the games.
It looked like Myung-gi had finally channeled his fatherly instinct for his newborn daughter in the final Sky Squid game, when he teamed up with Gi-hun and cunningly eliminated all the remaining players by throwing them off the towers.
However, it was all a ploy to be the last man standing with Gi-hun and his baby, who also became a player in the game following her mother's elimination.
Discussing his final deceit towards his baby, where he even threatens to throw her off the tower, Si-wan said to The Hollywood Reporter:
''Fear is what I believed Myung-gi would feel most of all, because ultimately, he’s a pathetic coward. So, I made the choice that fear was the basis of my whole performance in that sequence [Sky Squid game].''
After his actions in the Squid Game Season 3 finale, fans are questioning his motives and expressing their hate for the character. While it was all scripted, Si-wan couldn't help but question his character's motives, too, as he added:
''...That was a recurring question mark for me throughout shooting — is it really good that Myung-gi is still in the game?''
He also discussed his preferred ending for Myung-gi in Squid Game:
''As for myself, Yim Si-Wan, I would have preferred that he died by sacrificing himself for Kim Jun-hee. I wish she could have been the one to play the final game with their baby. But it wasn’t my choice to make.''
While this ending is quite ideal and optimistic, it doesn't sit well with the theme of Dong-hyuk's world and the vision he had for the show. He wanted to expose the limit of humanity's greed, which is endless, as the show reiterates.
Myung-gi started out as just another Player in season 2, but by the final game, he transformed into a greedy and bloodthirsty human, even threatening to kill his own child to win the prize money.
