Dateline NBC episode A Girl Named Egypt has explored the unfortunate death of twenty-seven-year-old Michigan singer Egypt Covington. Egypt was reportedly murdered in 2017 by three armed men while carrying out a botched robbery.
As reported by Dateline correspondent Andrea Canning, Covington was discovered dead in her home in Washtenaw County, Michigan, on June 23, 2017, at 7:15 p.m. She had reportedly died from a bullet wound to her head.
Egypt was known as a singer in Ann Arbor and had been previously employed at a local bar called Fraser's Pub. The official synopsis of A Girl Named Egypt reads:
"Twenty-seven-year-old Egypt Covington is found murdered in her home; investigators in Michigan quickly identify a person of interest but years pass without an arrest."

Who was Egypt Covington?
Egpyt Covington was a twenty-seven-year-old singer from Van Buren Township, Michigan. She was born in Detroit on July 19, 1989, and was well-known for her singing skills in Ann Arbor. Egypt had also worked in Fraser's Pub, a local bar, before switching her career to singing.
After her death, Arbor Brewing Company launched a seasonal beer called " A Girl Named Egypt' in her memory. A portion of the revenue generated from its sale went to charity supporting music scholarships, animal welfare, and victims of domestic violence.
What happened to Michigan singer Egypt Covington?
As reported on Dateline, Michigan singer Egypt Covington was found mysteriously murdered in her home on June 23, 2017. The first report of the crime came through her boyfriend, Curtis Meadows.
According to Curtis, Egypt did not respond to his morning check-in text till late that day, leaving him worried. He reportedly said in a statement:
"I always sent her a good morning text."
But when Curtis did not get any response from her for hours, he panicked and drove to her house to check on her. He found that the front door was ajar. According to Curtis' statement:
"She was tied up, blood clearly covering the side of her head."
When the local police discovered Covington's body, she was found lying with her hands tied by Christmas lights. There was a bullet wound on her head, the cause of her death. Moreover, a cushion was also found with a bullet hole, confirming that it was used to muffle the sound of gunfire.
Who was convicted in Egypt Covington's murder?
The Michigan singer was murdered by three men: Timothy Eugene Moore, Shandon Ray Groom, and Shane Lamar Evans. However, the investigation reportedly had a setback till 2020.
Egypt's boyfriend, Curtis Meadows, was the first to be interrogated. However, the local police did not find any connections linking Curtis to her murder. However, a person of interest was identified.
No arrests were made till 2020, resulting in a lot of protests from the local people as well as the deceased's family. Finally, in 2020, the case was handed over to Michigan State Police.
A geofence warrant was used to solve the mysterious murder. Eventually, the State Police arrested Timothy Eugene Moore (from Toledo) and Shane Lamar Evans (from Sumpter Township). A month later, Shandon Ray Groom was also taken into custody in connection with Egypt's murder.
Shandon Groom got 17-26 years imprisonment after pleading guilty to second-degree murder, and Timothy Moore got 20-55 years in prison. The third suspect, Shane Evans, is currently serving his time in prison after being sentenced to 15-25 years.
What was the motive behind the murder?
As seen on Dateline, Evans' statements revealed that the three were hanging out, and Groom had made plans to steal weed from Covington's neighbor's duplex house. According to reports, Evans' lawn care company regularly provided services at her duplex.
On the day of the murder, Evans dropped Groom and Moore at Hull Road and pointed out at the correct door. However, they made an error and entered the wrong house. There, Groom and Moore found Covington alone, watching a movie. They shot her at the back of her head and tied her up with Christmas lights.
Later that night, the other two men confirmed to Evans that they had been at the wrong residence. Thus, there was no actual motive to murder; Egypt was a victim of a robbery gone wrong.
