Wednesday made us quite accustomed to the powers and unique nature of the outcasts who became the heart of the show.
However, to think that there are some creatures that even the outcasts are scared of makes us wonder about the nature of these monsters. The Hydes raised many questions amongst the viewers. What are their powers, what makes them the way they are, and the list goes on. Let’s discuss more about this monstrous creature on Wednesday.
What's a hyde?
Unlike the other creatures, such as Enid’s lycathropes or psychics like Wednesday, Hydes were much more complicated and even dangerous. Unlike the other outcasts, the Hydes were not allowed into Nevermore Academy.
Through Nathaniel Faulkner’s catalogues, we learn that the Hydes, when awakened by a master, become bonded with the liberator. This, in turn, leads them to follow every command the master gives them. Uncle Fester also tells Wednesday about the incident with Olga Malacova, who was a Hyde and had killed many.
This information reveals how Thornhill easily manipulated Tyler’s Hyde form. Thornhill used Tyler’s anger towards Nevermore Academy and the outcasts and manipulated him to wreak havoc.
Nevermore Academy is a place where the outcasts can learn more about their abilities. However, the school did not allow Hydes to enrol. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Hunter Doohan spoke about Tyler’s anger:
“he's filled with so much anger and hatred toward her and her family and all of Nevermore because of what happened to his mom. She was a Hyde and she died because Nevermore doesn't accept them and won't teach them how to control their powers, so I think Tyler's filled with a lot of rage and that's how he justifies his murdering spree.”
It cannot be denied that the Hydes are mysterious creatures. There is the aspect of identity and control in their being. The Hyde is a victim of their curse and their master. They depict how their nature can be manipulated and twisted by outside forces, leaving them without control over any of it.

This adds a layer of depth to their being. The fact that Nevermore Academy can help these creatures makes us question whether the Hydes are truly monsters or just victims of their situation.
In the second season, we see a completely different side of Tyler as he kills Thornhill cold-bloodedly. Initially, it was seen that he would never be able to hurt Thornhill. However, he understood Thornhill was using him for her own good. This led to his anger, which ultimately propelled his actions.
