Gary Oldman as Jackson Lamb might have given us the best spy in Slow Horses that we didn’t know we needed. Adapted from Mick Herron’s novels, the Apple TV series narrates the story of a group of discarded MI5 agents who had been sent to Slough House, an administrative purgatory for them, supervised by Gary Oldman’s Jackson Lamb.
While the show is ready to hit the screens with season 5 in September 2025, and is already renewed for two more seasons, reports about Oldman hinting at retirement have been around since 2022. However, in a recent interview with the Hollywood Reporter, one of the executive producers of Slow Horses, Douglas Urbanski, revealed that he might have another show to keep Gary Oldman from retiring.
He said:
"We may have found something. If so, we’d bring it to Apple first."
More on this in our story.
Slow Horses: EP Douglas Urbanski has found a way to not let Gary Oldman retire after the show
Gary Oldman needs no introduction. He is one of the excellent actors in the industry with several accolades, including an Oscar, a Golden Globe, and numerous others. His role as Jackson Lamb in Slow Horses has become one of his most popular roles.
The grumpy and flatulent former spy leaves no chance of demeaning his Slough House members, but will also be seen risking everything, even getting into arguments with other service agents and the police, to save them. Gary Oldman is loved for portraying the insult-spewing character, but there have always been questions about whether he will continue acting after Slow Horses ends.
In a recent interview with the Hollywood Reporter, Douglas Urbanski, an executive producer on the Apple TV show, revealed that he talked to the English actor about how long he wants to do the show and also revealed that he wants to do another show.
He shared:
"I had a recent conversation with Gary. He asked, “How long do you think this will go?” I told him, “As long as we can keep it good. If it ever starts getting stupid, we’ll stop.” But he has told me he would like to do a new show immediately after this one."
Further, he said that right now their focus is on Slow Horses and ending the show properly. After that, we might see the English actor donning another character and doing the best job, as he always does.
Gary Oldman’s comments about his retirement
The speculations about the Oscar-winning actor’s retirement came into existence after his interview with The Sunday Times in 2022, where he revealed that he might want to retire after playing Jackson Lamb in Slow Horses. He shared:
"I’m 65 next year, 70 is around the corner. I don’t want to be active when I’m 80. I’d be very happy and honoured and privileged to go out as Jackson Lamb [his character in Slow Horses] — and then hang it up."
In the same year, Gary Oldman also shared in a Deadline interview that he would love to play the character of Lamb for a long time. He said:
"To be able to sort of wrap it all up playing Jackson Lamb, I would consider myself very honored and very lucky to be able to do that. I would never say never."
He further added:
"There’s always something that may come in, and you know, get the taste buds going but I’d be thrilled and honored to play him for the foreseeable future."
