Hulu's latest true-crime docuseries The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox will premiere on August 20, 2025. Little did the 20-year-old exchange student know that her new life in Italy would eventually turn into a living nightmare, ruining her public image and relationships for years to come.

In 2007, the world witnessed the wrongful conviction of Amanda Knox, an exchange student in Italy who was twice convicted (and twice acquitted) for the murder of her roommate, Meredith Kercher. She spent nearly four years in prison before being acquitted of all charges in 2015.

Nearly two decades later, Amanda Knox (now an author, activist, and journalist) executive produces The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox, Hulu's upcoming docuseries that closely follows Knox's conviction and its aftermath.

In addition, a fellow victim of wrongful media representation and Knox's friend, Monica Lewinsky, also serves as an executive producer on the series. Lewinsky infamously entered into a relationship with sitting President Bill Clinton, which eventually led to his impeachment.

Here's how Knox helped the creative team to bring her tale to life in The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox.

The world witnessed Amanda Knox's conviction for the murder of her college roommate back in 2007, where her case was brutally scrutinized in the public eye. Almost two decades after the case that changed her life, Knox is telling her side of the story in Hulu's The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox, which is nearing its double-episode premiere.

While the world is yet to witness Knox's tale of tragedy, resistance, and eventual triumph, she shared her real experience in the interrogation room when she was initially arrested for the murder of Meredith Kercher. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Knox revealed how real experience differs vastly from how it is portrayed in popular media:

''The hardest thing is conveying what it feels like to be behind a closed door at the mercy of authority figures. There’s resistance to acknowledging the depth of that trauma. The dynamics aren’t as clear cut as we see on TV shows, this cartoonish interaction. It’s way more complicated and nuanced.''

Breaking down the horrifying atmosphere of the interrogation room and other details in The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox, she added:

''Multiple people in the room, some yelling, some hitting me, others comforting and coaxing. I was very young, emotionally vulnerable, and didn’t know what was going on. I wasn’t just coerced into implicating myself — I was coerced into believing I might have witnessed a crime.''

The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox: A haunting tale of lived trauma

As Amanda Knox revealed in many of her interviews, Hulu's The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox is not just any other true-crime docuseries but a way for her to reclaim the life and years that were forever destroyed by her wrongful conviction and the subsequent media scrutiny in the public eye.

She went on to highlight how she still lives in 'justified paranoia' over her wrongful imprisonment years ago. The Hulu series is a way for her to reclaim her life and tell her perspective on the lived trauma in front of the world, which judged and examined her years ago:

''Once you’ve been labeled and buried, how do you emerge as someone more complex, with more value than what society gave you credit for? To stand up for yourself takes … well, not balls. Something else!''

Tell Me Lies fame Grace Van Patten will help bring Knox's tale on-screen in The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox, and she felt emotional watching the actress undergo the same 'psychological journey' as her during filming.

In addition, the teaming up of Knox and Lewinsky on the Hulu series is also interesting. It is a way for wrongly labeled women to reclaim their voices and stories from the public and give them their own twist. A chance meeting between the now-friends inspired Hulu's new docuseries that eventually became an outlet for their bottled-up emotions and trauma.

The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox will premiere on Hulu on August 20, 2025.
