The Pitt has definitely proved to be one of the year's most unexpected hits. Having recently concluded its debut season, the show has promptly been greenlit for an upcoming second season owing to its popularity.

There are several reasons that make The Pitt one of the best drama shows and arguably the best in recent times in the genre of medical procedurals. A determing reason is the fabulous screenplay that allows the characters to reach the zenith of their development.

While all of the characters on the debut season of The Pitt go through revealing arcs, there are two characters in particular that had starkly opposite journeys. These two characters of Dr. Langdon, played by Patrick Ball, and Dr. Santos, played by Isa Briones. They ended up being on the finale completely different from what they were presented to be on the premiere.

Here's everything that we know.

The Pitt: Dr. Langdon and Dr. Santos' character arcs explored in detail

At the start of the HBO show's debut season, Dr. Santos was first presented as an ambitious and self-centered young doctor who was dismissive of leadership. She often clashed with Dr. Langdon over what seemed to be trifles and was also shown to snarking at her other colleagues such as Dr. Whitaker and Dr. King. On the other hand, Dr. Langdon came across as a confident and calm senior resident who had nerves of steel and always came up with the correct diagnosis for a patient. Furthermore, he was shown to be remarkably calm under duress.

All of this changed as the storyline shifted gears midway through the debut season. Langdon and Dr. Robby came together for a heated exchange, after Santos complained about missing medication of patients who were treated by Langdon. It was revealed that Langdon had been compulsively stealing medication from the supplies and was an addict.

After the confrontation, Langdon was portrayed more and more in a negative light. He appeared to be starkly self-centered and seemed paranoid while begging Robby to let his crime go unnoticed. Santos, on the contrary, proved to be a proficient and kind doctor by the season finale and was shown as extremely compassionate.

Patrick Ball opens up about his character

Actor Patrick Ball recently spoke in an interview with Vulture magazine wherein he shed some light on his character of Dr. Langdon. When asked if he knew that Langdon had been stealing medicines, Ball answered:

"From fairly early on. That wasn’t part of the initial rounds of auditions, but when they decided to have me screen test, they included that scene from episode ten. It was my first time doing anything like this. They fly me out to L.A., take me to [Pitt executive producer] John Wells’s headquarters, and I’m sitting there with Noah. We do the first couple of scenes, which were just banter, and then we get to that big freak out."

All the episodes of The Pitt are exclusively available on HBO.
