1) Pilot (S1E1)

The show wastes absolutely no time messing with our heads. Right from Matlock episode 1, we think we’ve got it all figured out. But the show has some other plans.
We meet this sweet, older lady who shows up at a law firm for a job. She seems harmless, with a warm smile and a story. Little do we realize that both her name and the story aren’t real.
She’s actually Madeline Kingston and no, she’s not broke, struggling, or desperate to support her grandson. In fact, the moment she’s done playing her part at the firm, we see her hopping into a limousine and riding off to a giant mansion, where her very alive husband and adorable grandson are waiting for her.
That’s when we know there’s a mission. Her daughter tragically overdosed on opioids, and Madeline believes this law firm has something to do with it. And now, she’s here to find out the truth.
2) Rome, in a Day (S1E2)

Episode 2 of Matlock draws back the curtain on Matty’s double life. And it’s a messy, stressful one. She has now officially landed her spot at Jacobson Moore.
But little does she know that her legal knowledge isn’t enough to fool the people in the firm into believing her. This episode has everything from her air date blunder about the original Matlock series and some more pressing concerns like a murder charge, a doctored video, and simmering distrust within the firm.
As the team scrambles to defend a mute teen accused of murder, Matty juggles solving the case, battling guilt over her daughter, and answering questions of suspicious colleagues. All of this while proving she’s not just bluffing her way through the biggest lie of her life.
3) A Guy Named Greg (S1E3)

Episode 3 of Matlock forces Matty into the courtroom. And her plan to secretly steal from Olympia soon becomes something even more personal. She is hoping to distract everyone from her real agenda. So she does the clumsy grandma act but that wins over the jury and ropes her into leading a sexual harassment case.
Shae Banfield is a jury expert who immediately sees through her. Things go further off script when Matty finally gets alone with Olympia’s laptop, only to spill coffee on it. Or so Olympia thinks. But Matty actually swaps the laptop and hands it to Alfie, whose tech skills land them on a hidden voicemail from Olympia’s late father. He is heard giving the same pep talk Olympia gave Matty before trial.
Matty hesitates, clearly growing attached to the very people she's deceiving. But soon she sees the investigation corkboard and Matty pushes those feelings aside. This episode tells us that though she is resolute in her plans, she might be getting attached to the people she’s not supposed to.
4) The Rabbit and the Hawk (S1E4)

In Matlock Episode 4, Matty’s mission to expose the person behind the hidden Wellbrexa documents literally hits closer to home. After finding grandson Alfie passed out in her office from an all-nighter digging into Olympia's laptop, Matty's thrilled by his progress but faces Edwin’s frustration over Alfie's slipping grades.
Despite promising Edwin she’ll keep Alfie out of the case, Matty soon seeks his help again when the missing documents lead her to the firm's file room. With Alfie’s help, they find proof implicating none other than Senior, head of the firm.
But the tension isn't just at home. Senior betrays Olympia and the associates during a major lawsuit that deepens office divides. With her marriage strained and her grandson caught in the crossfire, Matty’s quest for justice risks destroying her family.
5) Claws (S1E5)

Dating apps are a nightmare, especially for Matty in this Matlock episode. As Billy helps Sarah with her office crush, he secretly sets up a dating profile for Matty, accidentally exposing her true identity to a mystery suitor.
Meanwhile, a major class-action case hits home for Matty as she helps a drug-addicted witness. This triggers painful memories of her daughter’s struggles. Things blow up when Matty’s actions jeopardize the case and her bond with Olympia, Billy, and Sarah.
But she manages to outsmart the system. She exposes a corrupt prison warden and secures a $2 million settlement for each abused inmate.
Matty and Edwin struggle with tech woes in this episode as they keep Alfie out of the case. Olympia and Julian play flirty exes, making us wonder why they even filed for divorce in the first place.
6) Sixteen Steps (S1E6)

Matlock breaks from its usual ways in this episode with a flashback heavy episode. We are taken back to Matty's first day at Jacobson Moore and the events that followed.
We get key insights into Matty’s motivation for her Wellbrexa crusade. Meanwhile, in the present, the firm tackles a retrial for grieving mothers suing over tainted baby formula. It’s a case that derailed Olympia and Julian two years ago and apparently, Olympia’s marriage too.
Matty nudges Olympia to push their client Vanessa into a testimony that’s emotional, which finally lands them a win.
Matty refuses to help Stanley, the mysterious suitor. He is a grieving father who says that her son is on the same path as Matty’s daughter.
Matty has a panic attack when she realizes the emotional toll testifying has on Vanessa. Edwin pleads for her to quit the firm. And she goes in the next day to do the same. But then, she's given a spot on Julian’s Wellbrexa case. And she decides against it. The timing is just perfect, maybe almost too perfect.
7) Belly of the Beast (S1E7)

In this Matlock episode, we see Julian and Olympia closer than ever. The previous episode definitely hinted at their growing connection. But this time, they almost feel like a couple. It’s clear they've been rebuilding their relationship.
At the firm's Christmas party, Olympia defends Julian. It’s a moment that confirms she's slowly leaning toward not going through with the divorce. She doesn’t even seem to care about Elijah, who was once her fling.
But when Senior makes a comment, it catches us off guard. It might have revealed something significant about Julian. It leaves us with several questions.
Later, Julian finally tells Olympia that he had cheated on her when their marriage was falling apart. Naturally, Olympia isn’t pleased to hear it, and she walks away in silence.
Julian’s confession about his affair breaks the trust he and Olympia were rebuilding. Their relationship and work life now face more trouble than ever.
8) No, No Monsters (S1E8)

In Episode 8 of Matlock, Matty finds herself in more personal and professional problems than ever. She wants to expose Senior for his role in the Wellbrexa case. But then she’s also developing a friendship with Olympia.
Matty sneaks into Senior's office to print the missing documents. But instead of proof, she finds a photo of Senior with another woman. She realizes that it was, indeed, a forgery of his signature on the Wellbrexa release. This means the real culprit might be Julian or Olympia.
Meanwhile, Olympia is handling her own messy situation. Her close friend betrays her trust by getting a nanny fired to cover up her affair. It’s the same nanny whose case Olympia has taken up. With Julian's recent confession about cheating and this new case, Olympia feels betrayed all over again.
Matty plants a recorder in Julian’s office to get answers, only to hear a painful conversation about his affair. Matty mutes the recorder, showing she isn’t ready to betray Olympia or Julian fully yet. The episode leaves Matty stuck between doing what’s right and protecting the people she’s grown to care about.
9) Friends (S1E9)

In Episode 9 of Matlock, Matty and Olympia team up to defend Sam. She is a pregnant delivery driver fired under suspicious circumstances. At first, it seems Sam was fired for allowing her truck to be stolen, but the truth comes to light. The company targeted Sam for trying to unionize. Matty and Olympia expose the company's lies.
Matty, on the other hand, continues to struggle to balance her feelings and her mission. Now that Senior is cleared of signing the missing Wellbrexa documents, Julian and Olympia are the only possible suspects.
And Matty's judgment is clearly clouded. Her growing bond with Olympia makes her ignore real doubts about the Wellbrexa case. Even worse, drama explodes at the firm when Olympia finds out Julian cheated with Shae Banfield.
The board must now choose between Julian and Olympia. And whoever stays will keep Matty on their team. The other one will walk away from the firm.
Matty has always relied on her instincts. This episode shows the danger of becoming too emotionally invested in the people you're supposed to be investigating.
The wrongful termination case involving Sam is a parallel to the main Wellbrexa storyline. Just as Sam's employer tried to cover up their wrongdoing by blaming her, Matty may be unknowingly ignoring signs that Olympia herself could be guilty in the missing documents case.
Matlock pushes the system it depicts. Hosted by Kathy Bates, every episode comes with thoughtful cases, and a greater conspiracy that blurs the line of courtroom narrative.
The nine best episodes test Matty’s emotions and loyalties that blur the line between truth and suspicion. Matlock is a must-watch for fans of the genre.
