Everybody Loves Raymond is a sitcom that first aired on CBS on 13th September 1996. It ran for the next nine years, spanning nine seasons till 16th May 2005. Ranked as the 35th best sitcom by Rolling Stone, the show and its protagonist, Raymond, were indeed loved by everybody.
The show revolved around Raymond Barone, who was a sportswriter for Newsday. Although married with three children, Raymond doesn't do much around the house, which angers his wife. On top of that, Raymond's overbearing parents, Marie and Frank, and older brother, Robert, live across the street, often interfering in their lives.
The show ended on 16th May 2005, and ever since, fans have been hoping for a reboot. However, Brad Garrett, who played Raymond's older brother, Robert, in an interview with PEOPLE, confirmed that a reboot isn't going to happen.
Why will there not be an Everybody Loves Raymond reboot?
Everybody Loves Raymond follows Ray Barone, a sarcastic sportswriter living in Long Island with his wife Debra and their three children, Ally, Geoffrey, and Michael. Ray avoids household and parenting duties, frustrating Debra, who often feels overwhelmed. Their lives are further complicated by Ray’s meddling parents, Marie and Frank, and his jealous older brother Robert, all of whom live on the opposite street and frequently interfere in their lives.
Marie's favoritism toward Ray and constant criticism of Debra sparks quite the tension in the family. Ray is passive in family conflicts, often caught in the middle. Despite conflicts, the show highlights that they all love each other deeply, especially through Ray and Debra’s nightly conversations that reflect their rocky but loving marriage.
Everybody Loves Raymond starred Ray Romano and Patricia Heaton as Ray and Debra Barone. Brad Garrett played Robert Barone while Doris Roberts and Peter Boyle played Marie and Frank Barone, respectively. Madylin Sweeten started as Ally Barone while her real-life twin brothers, Sawyer and Sullivan Sweeten, started as the twin sons of Raymond and Debra, Geoffrey and Michael Barone.
It is not new for older shows to get rebooted. For instance, One Day at a Time (1975-1984) was rebooted as a new show with a similar premise in 2017, which ran till 2020. Full House (1987-1995) was rebooted as Fuller House (2016-2020), starring most of the older cast, focusing on the children of the original show, now adults.
Thus, at Disney Pixar’s Elio premiere, PEOPLE asked Brad Garrett if there would be a reboot of Everybody Loves Raymond. He responded,
"There won't be,"
He continued,
"And I'm just saying that because that's something that Ray and Phil [Rosenthal, the show's creator] have always said."
While this is disheartening news for the fans, there is a meaningful reason as to why the reboot won't be happening. Garrett told PEOPLE,
"There is no show without the parents,"

He explains,
"They were the catalyst, and to do anything that would resemble that wouldn't be right to the audiences or to the loyal fan base. And it was about those two families, and you can't get around that."
Peter Boyle and Doris Roberts played Marie and Frank, parents to Raymond and Robert, in Everybody Loves Raymond. Unfortunately, Peter Boyle passed away on 12th December 2006, and Doris Roberts passed away on 17th April 2016. As Brad Garrett says, they were an integral part of the show, and a reboot without them would make it feel incomplete.

While Everybody Loves Raymond will not get a reboot, Brad Garrett still thinks of his time on the show fondly. As he told PEOPLE,
"I know [the reboot] won't happen, but 30 years later, I got very lucky to get on that bus. I'm very grateful,"
Everybody Loves Raymond is streaming on Peacock and Paramount+.
