Here's everything about the new AI guidelines for Emmy 2026

As per the new guideline issued by the Television Academy, it intends to keep the work of people in the focal point, whilst not erasing the contribution of AI. Under this guideline, the creators of the submissions for Emmy 2026 would have to present a clear picture of their process of using AI in their work.

So, it is not that AI usage is completely forbidden in the selection process, as they are focussing on how the tools have been used. And most importantly, if it is in a way that does not take away human labour from the creative process. Thus, this guideline for Emmy 2026 seeks for accountability and transparency from creators about AI usage.

It goes without saying that in this day and age, AI is inevitably a significant part of creative processes. The only pertinent concern that lingers is how the person uses those tools. Artificial intelligence, as we all know, is simply a technical tool that can help to bring human creativity to life. But it is not meant to erase the work of humans or become the nucleus of the creative process.

Apart from the AI-related guidelines, the TV Academy has also made another important change for Emmy 2026. The category 'Outstanding Television Movie' shall now onwards be only called 'Outstanding Movie'. In that way, it aligns more with how films are made and distributed today. These days, films are often not released on the television like they used to, so this new terminology fits more accurately.

Going by the new guidelines by the Academy, it seems that they are striving to adapt to the current situation and context in a way that is fair towards artists. The main intent behind these updated guidelines seem to create a careful equilibrium between the changing technological advancements and the fair recognition of artistic labor. As they acknowledge the importance of AI, they are taking a diligent step to ensure that modern technology does not obliterate the work of humans by any means.

The 78th Primetime Emmy Awards is scheduled to take place in September 2026.
