Season 1 follows a former Navy SEAL commander, James Reece (Chris Pratt), following a disastrous mission abroad in a tightly wound conspiracy thriller. Here is how each event was a turning point for Reece:

The Ambush (Episode 1, "The Engram"): The series launches when Reece sees his platoon destroyed during a secret SEAL operation, and doubts his loyalty to his command as well as his own memory of the event.

Homecoming and personal loss: Reece arrives back in the U.S. to see his entire family be targeted and murdered, which becomes the emotional burden that allows the show to thrive on the revenge arc.

Unraveling a conspiracy (Episodes 2-5): Investigative journalist Katie Buranek (Constance Wu) assists Reece in unraveling a conspiracy trail that involves a pharmaceutical company (Capstone Industries) in the use of illegal medical testing on SEAL teams, implicating powerful people in the military and the private sector.

Betrayal (Episodes 6-8): Probing deeper and deeper, Reece finds that a number of his fellow military superiors and a close friend, Ben Edwards (Taylor Kitsch), were also in on the conspiracy. Edwards, as a close friend, played a pivotal part in the conspiracy that led Reece to his most ruthless acts of vengeance.

Warpath and resolution (Episodes 7-8): Reece carries out his own version of justice by taking revenge on those responsible and exposing the plot, but at a great personal cost, as the final episodes expose the clear betrayal.

Throughout Season 1, the mixture of psychological trauma, loyalty, and the effects of unguided power brings it one step up the scale of a mere revenge thriller.
