ABC, along with 20th Television and Lionsgate, confirmed the The Rookie spin-off in December 2024, focusing on a male cop entering a “second act.” According to the recent reports by Deadline, the show has finally got its title, The Rookie North. This will be the second spin-off of the original show after the cancellation of The Rookie: Feds.

The spin-off getting a title is big news for the procedural drama fans. The casting for the lead role is underway, while the plot of the spin-off will be an ode to the original series. It will follow a protagonist in his later years, building his career in the police, just like Nolan's character. Read on to know more about the new spin-off of the popular show.

As mentioned, the franchise's second spin-off announced a major development since its announcement. It has got its registered title, which suggests that the development is ongoing actively, and the audience can soon witness another binge-watching drama promising more adventure, crime cases, and uniforms on screen.

As per reports, Alex Hawley has been refining the pilot script and exchanging notes with ABC. The pilot script is complete, while the creative and executive producers include Alexi Hawley as franchise creator; Nathan Fillion, star of the original series; Bill Norcross, the real-life LAPD officer whose story inspired the original series; and Michelle Chapman.

The spin-off is expected to follow Alex, an overachiever, whose life is not going as per his plan. He joins the police force in a late-career shift, mirroring John Nolan's arc in the original show. The show is going to adapt a similar structure and tone as the original series and promises more character-driven moments of drama and levity grounded in personal reinvention and second chances.

What could The Rookie spin-off mean for the franchise?

In an interview with TVLine in May, Alexi Hawley said he feels “really positive” about the spin-off's script but is still “waiting to hear from ABC.” Reflecting on The Recruit’s cancellation, he said the original series stands out because of “its heart” and the “emotional investment” viewers have in the characters.

“I feel really good about the script. Ultimately, we’re waiting to hear what the needs are [at ABC], but I feel very positive about it. My caveat, said with a genuine laugh, is that I also felt very positive about Season 3 of [Netflix’s] The Recruit, and it ended up not happening. But look, it’s apples and oranges. We just got a Season 8 on Rookie, the show works really well for them…. Beyond that, it’s out of my hands."

The Rookie North is part of ABC’s increasing commitment to franchise-building, echoing successes like 9-1-1: Nashville. The success of the show would establish the original show as ABC's next tentpole franchise, providing cross-show storytelling like Grey's Anatomy and Station 19.
