The legal drama The Rainmaker has drawn in viewers with its gripping court proceedings and multifaceted character interactions. A critical point in the show, the assault on Sarah Plankmore, a lawyer and a major character portrayed by Madison Iseman, has become the core of her character arc and the show’s narrative tension.
While Sarah goes through this horrific incident, the series slowly reveals how it will affect her in terms of personal development and career, thus creating a very strong storyline about resilience and justice.
Madison Iseman, in a recent exclusive interview, divulged that this incident would be a major factor in influencing Sarah’s future in the show and her motivations as well.
The Rainmaker tells the story of a new law school graduate dealing with a morally bankrupt legal system. Sarah Plankmore is the only one in the team of first-year associates who shows a strong drive while working at the same law firm as the protagonist, Rudy Baylor.
Her relationship dynamics and aspirations provide the plot with an additional layer of sophistication. The assault of Sarah by Brad Noonan, a senior member of the firm, is a major turning point that affects the storyline in more ways than one.
The incident takes place as Brad chokes Sarah really hard without her approval during an intimate moment. So the betrayal really intensifies the whole situation, as she is already tackling a male-dominated and toxic environment.
How Sarah’s assault will impact her future on The Rainmaker

Star Madison Iseman expressed that the incident severely affected her character's transformation, and therefore, it could change her mind about the strategy at the law firm and her love life. In an exclusive interview with Us Weekly, Iseman said:
“It’s a very important moment in Sarah’s story… She’s at a crossroads at this moment, where she starts to gain all this information.”
Sarah's connection with Brad makes it clear that the men at her law firm are in control. She knows her status, is aware of the steps, and initially has the upper hand while playing Brad as he plays her. But when Brad gives her the information she is after, he then discloses his true nature all at once. Iseman explained:
“At that moment, she knows enough information where she probably should leave the case and leave the law firm. But I think at that moment she knows if she goes then Brad wins.”
The assault ultimately solidifies Sarah’s resolve.
“After this assault takes place, she’s not willing to let him win…she’s going to pick the dark side and manipulate the manipulator”.
Iseman furthermore depicted Sarah as a multifaceted character: youthful, eager, and occasionally naive, yet smart and capable of making hard choices.
“It’s very interesting to tap into young women who make questionable decisions even though some people might disagree with a lot of the decisions that Sarah makes”.
Iseman remarked that playing Sarah enables her to delve into the character’s engagement with corruption, manipulation, and the hurdles that come with a legal profession.
What is The Rainmaker about?

The Rainmaker is based on John Grisham’s novel but has been creatively reimagined into an exciting legal drama series taking place in mid-1990s Memphis.
The plot of the series revolves around Rudy Baylor, a law school graduate played by Milo Callaghan, whose aspiration of getting into a prestigious firm is dashed, and consequently, he lands a job at a small-time personal injury law practice.
Together with senior partner Bruiser Stone and paralegal Deck Shifflet, Rudy goes up against mighty rivals like the Great Benefit Hospital Systems in wrongful death and insurance fraud lawsuits. The show combines court drama with the personal sagas of justice and corruption.
Sarah Plankmore is an ambitious and talented first-year associate playing an important role in the challenging legal environment. The series narrates her romantic entanglements with Rudy and later Brad. Sarah's love life throws light on the difficulties and dilemmas that young lawyers face in their careers.
The firm’s internal strife and external confrontations with corporate malpractice are the driving forces behind the plot that is able to hook viewers.
The Rainmaker is full of tension created by the conflicts that are both legal and personal. The “David vs. Goliath” theme, which is prominent in Grisham’s novels, is seen in the case where Rudy is up against corrupt hospitals, thus exposing the disparities between the rich and the poor and the vices of the system.
At the same time, Sarah's assault unveils the usually concealed violence in workplaces. The Rainmaker very tactfully and realistically handles these issues, and hence characters like Sarah can grow genuinely as they fight the repercussions both inside and outside the court.
