South Park fans have been eagerly awaiting Season 27 of the beloved pop culture show. However, they are in for a disappointing surprise, as the creators of the show recently revealed that the show will not be released on July 9 as originally planned. Instead, fans will now have to wait till July 23 to watch their favorite characters back on screen again.
The creators primarily attribute the delay to the merger between Paramount Global, which is the parent company of Comedy Central, and Skydance Media.
Although the announcement for the merger came a long time back — sometime last summer — the details of the merger haven’t been consolidated yet. This has led to subsequent confusion about the streaming platform that will air the upcoming season of the show. The creators of South Park, Trey Parker and Matt Stone, have opened up about their feelings regarding this situation in an X post, stating:
"This merger is a sh*t show and it’s f*cking up “South Park.." We are at the studio working on new episodes and we hope fans get to see them somehow."

South Park Season 27 delays are not just because of the Paramount Global and Skydance Media merger
Season 27 was originally slated for a July 9 release, and fans were eagerly awaiting this, especially since the previous season ended back in 2023. However, much to fans’ disappointment, the creators of the show recently announced that the release of Season 27 would be pushed back by a couple of weeks. Instead, the upcoming season will be released on July 23.
There are two main reasons behind this delay. One, as stated by the creators themselves, is the merger that is currently taking place between Paramount Global and Skydance Media. The other is the confusion regarding the streaming rights for the upcoming season.
The streaming rights to South Park were previously owned by Max; however, that deal expired in June 2025. Owing to the merger, fans expected that Paramount+ would have the streaming rights for the show starting July 1; however, that has not been the case. Similarly, Netflix has also tried to get the streaming rights for the show, but so far, there is no clarity on that front. In fact, there is a possibility for multiple streaming sites to get non-exclusive rights to the show.
At the time of writing, fans can watch all previous seasons of South Park on HBO Max. However, they can watch the upcoming season on Comedy Central after its release.
