South Park has been known as one of television’s most daring animated sitcoms. Created by Trey Parker and Matt Stone, the show follows Stan, Kyle, Cartman, and Kenny and their daily life in their town in Colorado. Known for its bold humor, sharp social commentary, and readiness to address any subject, the series has remained a popular show for years.
But one storyline had been going on for too long: Randy Marsh’s Tegridy Farms. After several seasons, that saga has finally been wrapped up, bringing an end to a rather dragged-out chapter of the series.
South Park's Tegridy Farms storyline
Back in 2018, when Colorado’s legalization of marijuana was making headlines, the creators introduced a new direction for Randy Marsh. He moved his family to the countryside, launching a cannabis farm called Tegridy Farms. Initially, it was a clever and well-planned storyline, with Randy fully committing to his new business while his wife and kids hated every bit of it.
Audiences liked it initially, but it soon became a boring storyline. Over time, Randy became the focal point of South Park. Entire seasons and multiple Paramount+ specials revolved around his farm, featuring plots like hiring Towlie, expanding into China, and feuding with Tolkien Black’s family. While these plotlines were not completely unpopular, fans began to feel the show had drifted too far from what made it so good.
The real charm of South Park has always been the kids. Stan and Kyle often act as the voice of reason, Cartman represents the worst sides of human nature, and Kenny brings his own kind of chaos. Supporting characters like Butters also shine because of their innocence clashing with the absurd adult world. With Randy in the spotlight for so long, that balance was lost, leaving many viewers frustrated that the show had essentially turned into a show about Randy Marsh.
Tegridy Farms comes to an end
The long-running farm storyline came to an end in season 27. The season began with episodes addressing politics and current events. Then, in episode three, Sickofancy, the Tegridy Farms storyline finally ended. In the episode, ICE raids Randy’s farm, detaining his workers and leaving only Towelie behind. Desperate to save the business, Randy spirals, teaming up with ChatGPT while heavily abusing ketamine. His plan involves sending Towlie to President Trump in the hopes of getting marijuana legalized nationwide.
But things only get worse from here on. Towlie ends up in Trump’s hands, Randy loses his grip on reality, and his wife steps in to take control. With their money gone and their future uncertain, the couple decides to end the business. The episode ultimately ends with the Marsh family selling Tegridy Farms and heading back to town.
Though the episode wasn’t as strong as the season’s first two episodes; it gave fans what they had been waiting for: an end to the farm storyline. With that closure, South Park is free to shift its focus back to the kids, where it belongs.
