Somebody Somewhere is partly based on fiction and partly on actual events. Real life inspires some of the major plots of the movie. In an interview with Variety, she stated that Somebody Somewhere is what her life might have been if she had not moved to New York and chose to stay back in Kansas.

Bridget Everett said:

“And the other parts that are in concert with my real life are the grief of losing a sister and then also the complex relationship I have with music and singing and what it means to me and how it informs my life and who I am.”

On similarities with the character, Bridget further added that she struggled to fit in, saying:

“I always felt like an outsider. I was a little too blue, in terms of my comedy, and a little raunchy, and I had sit-down conversations with more than one teacher about, 'Do you need to talk like that?'"

In the show, Bridget Everett meets Joel, her high-school friend who takes her to a gay bar called Choir Practice. Bridget, in a statement, says that there is, indeed, a gay community in Kansas, although there is no gay bar there.
