More about Smoke
While the series essentially tells the story of a chase where one person is working on both sides of the law, the show not only focuses on the plot of the culprit being caught but also provides significant insight into each characters’ mind and thus explaining their thought process behind their actions.
The two arsonists, Dave and Freddy, both have troubles in their personal lives and, as Dave himself said, arsonists set fires to assert a sense of power, as they are essentially powerless in their own lives.
Freddy is an older employee at the fast food chain, Coop’s, where he is neither respected nor acknowledged, He is unhappy about his dreadful and lonely life, and he targets people who are happy and sets fire to their homes.
Dave on the other hand, struggles to bond with his wife’s son Emmett, who has clearly not taken his parents’ divorce well and remains sad about his father. The frustration in his personal life and the fact that he cannot act out in front of his family pushes him to the edge and he commits arsons to feel a sense of power, which his personal life cannot give him.
With these complicated characters and their entangled lives, it now remains to be seen how long does it take for Michlle to figure out that her suspicions about Dave being one of the arsonists is right.
Smoke can be streamed on Apple TV+.
