Fox's procedural drama, Prodigal Son, is inspired by classics that came before it but is not based on a true story.

The TV show was created by Sam Sklaver and Chris Fedak. Both of whom have executive-produced the show alongside Lee Toland Krieger, Sarah Schechter, Greg Berlanti, and Adam Kane. Fox Broadcasting Company premiered Prodigal Son on September 23, 2019.

The plot of Prodigal Son is based on Malcolm Bright, who discovered that his father, Martin Whitly, is a serial killer. He found the truth when he was a boy, and then he informed the police. As he grows up, he begins solving crimes for the NYPD. Tom Payne and Michael Sheen played the roles of son and father in the series.

Schechter's concept shared with Tom Payne

Tom Payne, the Walking Dead actor, gave all his heart to Prodigal Son. The initial concept of the show did not come from a true story. Payne explained during the summer Television Critics Association (TCA) Press Tour (2019) that the show's executive producer, Sarah Schechter, gave him the concept.

Chris and Sam revealed during the TCA panel that,

"Chris and I were really just playing around with characters and what makes them interesting on TV. We were wondering about parents and how they can affect children. What if your father was a serial killer — but also a really good dad?"

Tom played Malcom Bright, who was a disgraced former FBI profiler. The character worked for the NYPD. He has a special skill to see crimes from the killer's perspective. As a result, it helps the cops to collect the evidence that might get missed during an investigation. This special gift troubled him, and he lived in constant fear that he might become like his father.

Schechter's inspirational story from Melissa Moore's life

In 2018's podcast, Happy Face, Melissa told her story, and then she went on to become a writer and a TV crime correspondent. Happy Face was released as a true crime podcast that critically analyzed the life of Melissa Jasperson Moore. In the podcast, she revealed that she grew up as the daughter of Keith Hunter Jasperson, also known as the serial killer, Happy Face.

The podcast was hosted by Melissa herself. She revealed that her father murdered at least eight women and possibly more. Melissa's life experience inspired Payne to tell a story of how someone like Malcom feels when going through the same situation. CinemaBlend reported that Payne referred to the podcast as,

"Really helpful."

He added,

"Happy Face is really hard to listen to and made me cry many times, because there's a lot of pain and hurt there. And the character in [Prodigal Son] is in pretty much the same position and has a lot of walls up, but is intent on trying to understand his father and the similarities that may or may not exist between them."

Prodigal Son takes inspiration from Melissa Moore's life, but isn't based on true events.
