And Just Like That… is a direct sequel to HBO’s massively popular comedy-drama Sex and the City, which brings back several iconic characters from the original series. While veterans like Sarah Jessica Parker, Kristin Davis, and Cynthia Nixon agreed to reprise their roles in the sequel, one famous actor turned down the offer to return to the franchise.
Kyle MacLachlan, who played Trey MacDougal, the first husband of Charlotte York in Sex and the City, was approached to play the role once again in And Just Like That… In an interview with People magazine, the actor revealed he rejected the offer as he felt the idea was not good enough:
“They had reached out. I just felt that the idea that they had — I wanted a little bit more to it. I wanted the relationship that we had to be a little deeper.”
Kyle MacLachlan opens up about refusing to return in And Just Like That…
Actress Kristin Davis, who stars in And Just Like That… and Sex and the City as Charlotte York, had earlier revealed that the team had asked Kyle MacLachlan to reprise his role as Trey MacDougal in the sequel series, but he turned it down.
Explaining why he chose to decline the offer, MacLachlan said he did not quite like the plot point that would have introduced his character back into the narrative. However, he added that he is still willing to return to the show if the team comes up with a better story idea:
“I think it would be really fun to return, yeah, I do.”
MacLachlan further said:
“Maybe they'll come back with another idea. I'd be game.”
Hence, there is still a possibility that MacLachlan could appear in And Just Like That…, marking a reunion between Trey MacDougal and Charlotte York. The plot could mark a much-needed closure for both characters who got divorced in Sex and the City.
In the original series, MacLachlan played a recurring character in seasons 3 and 4. Trey was a cardiologist who had a chance encounter with Charlotte in a taxi. Sparks flew between the two instantly and they got married soon.
However, the couple ultimately parted ways due to issues arising out of a lack of physical intimacy. Charlotte then moved on with Harry Goldenblatt, the lawyer who handled her divorce with Trey, and got married to him in the fifth season.
The sequel series stars Sarah Jessica Parker as Carrie Bradshaw, Kristin Davis as Charlotte York Goldenblatt, and Cynthia Nixon as Miranda Hobbes. The cast also includes David Eigenberg, Evan Handler, Mario Cantone, Sarita Choudhury, and Sebastiano Pigazzi.
And Just Like That… seasons 1 and 2 are available on Max.
