Netflix's hit anthology series Black Mirror is returning for an eighth season, as its creator Charlie Brooker has confirmed. This means more dystopian stories, more sci-fi inventions and more episodes where you sit through the credits overthinking about what you just watched.
In an interview with Tudum, the creator made the announcement after the show went on to get a few nods at the Golden Globes, including a nomination for Best Television Limited Series, Anthology Series, or Motion Picture Made for Television, and Rashida Jones and Paul Giamatti getting acting nominations.
Speaking to the outlet, Brooker spoke about the show's future and stated,
"Well, luckily it does have a future, so I can confirm that Black Mirror will return, just in time for reality to catch up with it. So, that’s exciting. That chunk of my brain has already been activated and is whirring away. Black Mirror will return, and hopefully it’ll be more Black Mirror than ever,”
He also addressed the nominations, particularly opening up about the episodes Eulogy, where Giamatti stars and Common People starring Jones, as he added,
“It was a pleasant surprise and an honor. I mean, obviously, I don’t experience human emotion, but as much as I can emulate it, I was pleased.”
More details about Black Mirror
Black Mirror created by Brooker is one of the most loved anthology series' in recent times. The British series thrives on themes of discomfort, paranoia and science inventions that no one has probably imagined. Every episode tells a standalone story, with new characters, new worlds, and new ways technology can absolutely ruin your day.
The series first aired on Channel 4 in 2011, immediately setting the tone with The National Anthem, an episode so bold it cemented the show's presence. In 2015, Netflix picked up the show, giving it a bigger budget, a global reach, and an even darker sense of scale. Since then, the show has grown into a cultural event rather than just a series.
The two Golden Globe nominated performances from the show, revolve around this exact feeling. Eulogy is about a technology where a person can enter photographs as if they're scenery, with everyone and everything frozen in time. Giamatti plays Philip, a man who lost the love of his life years back and as she dies years later, he is made to revisit her memories, going back in time to see where everything went wrong.
Jones' Common People is about a woman who needs subscription services to stay alive. If that doesn't sound that bad, then the plot intensifies as the quality of the subscriptions declines while the prices soar. In the middle of it all is her husband, who is desperate to do anything to keep her alive.
Black Mirror is available to stream on Netflix.
