The Great British Bake Off's short-time co-host Sandi Toksvig had some unpalatable experiences when explaining her time on the show. Sandi co-hosted the show with the long-time host Noel Fielding from 2017 to 2020.
According to Sandi, "These three years felt like the longest three years of my life." The comedian, TV presenter, and writer found the hosting job monotonous as she had little to contribute.
Sandi opened up about her time on the show as the co-host during an interview with London's The Times and shared that despite getting paid heavily, she had to call it quits after 2020 because "she wasn't happy" doing it.
Sandi's wife, Debbie encouraged her to take the bold step and bid farewell to the baking show. Sandi also admitted during the interview that the excessive public attention from the show made her uncomfortable. The comedian did not appear to be a huge fan of the show and mentioned,
"I’d never watched it. I still haven’t watched it. I didn’t understand it."
Sandi Toksvig is still friends with Prue Leith, The Great British Bake Off's Judge
Sandi left The Great British Bake Off after a short span as a co-host in 2020 but befriended Prue Leith, one of the judges of the baking show. When asked about her relationship with the co-stars of the show by The Times, Sandi mentioned that she was "joined at the hips" with Prue Leith.
She also mentioned that she hadn't kept in touch with Paul Hollywood because of his busy schedule. However, when asked if she was still in contact with co-host Noel Fielding, she did not have much to add, and replied with a straightforward "No".
In an interview with The Radio Times early this year, she shared how futile she felt while hosting the show. She talked about it earlier and mentioned that she had no fun hosting the show. She added,
"I left Bake Off because I stopped having fun. I was literally standing there watching meringues dry and thinking, ‘Oh my God, my brain is atrophying.'”
After leaving the show, the TV presenter featured as the Quiz master/host for the BBC quiz show, QI. Her former co-host Noel Fielding recently opened up about Sandi's time on The Great British Bake Off in an interview with The Guardian and mentioned that she never quite stayed for longer anywhere except QI.
“she never stays anywhere too long, except QI, which is the perfect show for her."
Sandi also launched a book, Friends of Dorothy, whose promotions are keeping her busy. Fans can go and check out her X profile, @sanditoksvig for more updates about her book.
The Great British Bake Off 2024 premiered on September 24, on Channel 4 for British viewers. The American viewers can switch to Netflix on Fridays to watch a new episode.
