Cooking competitions are meant to push chefs towards working faster and better under pressure. Recently concluded 24 in 24: Last Chef Standing Season 2 has shown how such a challenging competition can push cheftestants to excel.
However, along with working under time pressure, continuously working for such a long duration surely takes a toll on participating chefs. With a particular format to be followed and a timeline to be maintained, 24 in 24: Last Chef Standing seems to be taking the working "under pressure" to an extreme level.
Competing against skilled fellow chefs and excelling at challenges while going through given tasks is not an easy task. Additionally, some of the tasks also feature teammates working together, which is also something that not everyone can handle. It not only tests the culinary skills but also various other factors of each chef.
24 in 24: Last Chef Standing: Not a regular cooking competition, but an intense race that demands so much more than culinary skills
The second season of 24 in 24: Last Chef Standing revealed Jonathan Sawyer as the winner. While he won the show, many participating chefs also learned so much while being on the Food Network show. As viewers already know, culinary competitions have a time factor as one of the essential parts of the show.
However, for 24 in 24: Last Chef Standing, the time is the most sensitive factor, on which everything depends. Not only are the tasks supposed to be completed within the given time frame, but chefs have been continuously in the game for a consecutive 24 hours.
Staying up for such long hours, and that too while being a part of an intense culinary competition, is challenging. There are experienced culinary chefs participating in the show. Competing against them, while excelling at every dish chefs prepare, did not seem easy.
Additionally, having such a huge pressure on the chefs might result in extreme fatigue, which would result in mistakes by the chefs. Additionally, while such an intense format of the show is followed for the participants, there have been concerns regarding the show's judging.
Lack of blind tasting has been one of the major concerns for 24 in 24: Last Chef Standing. Also, with such an intense timeline to be followed by the chefs, it doesn't leave more room for the chefs' creativity. Having time-pressured tasks invites various unavoidable risks.
While the Food Network show offers a unique format and chefs working under pressure gives an edge, it also overlooks many possible issues. One of the issues is overlooking the creativity of chefs over time sensitivity. Because chefs cannot focus on preparing their dishes and showing their culinary skills while having these many factors hanging over their heads.
Also, with the pressure of winning the Golden Knife, and if not won, the consequences of it are also another factor that showmakers should work on.
Whenever a chef wins the Golden Knife, he/ she is given specific duties to be carried out. As chefs share interpersonal relations with their fellow participants it might not be a good idea to assign such tasks to the chefs.
24 in 24: Last Chef Standing Season 2 episodes are now streaming on Food Network.
