Spock is one of the iconic Star Trek characters, who was portrayed by Leonard Nimoy in The Original Series set in the prime universe timeline.

In J.J. Abrams’ 2009 Star Trek movie, which is set in the Kelvin timeline, an older Spock appears as himself from the prime universe. This brought forth the idea that the younger versions of the cast will end up looking like their characters from the prime universe eventually. The storyline put a dent on the possibility of Discovery cast venturing into the Kelvin timeline.

Nimoy has played Spock in The Original Series, The Animated Series, Star Trek movies, and Star Trek: The Next Generation. Zachary Quinto portrayed the role of Spock in the 2009 Star Trek movie and the subsequent movies Star Trek Into Darkness and Star Trek Beyond. Star Trek 4, which will also be set in the Kelvin timeline, is still in the works. Ethan Peck portrays the role of young Spock in Discovery and Strange New Worlds.

Kelvin Spock and Prime Spock

J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek trilogy takes place in the Kelvin timeline. It is an alternative universe in Star Trek franchise comprising of same characters from the prime universe but in a different reality. It follows a different timeline compared to other Star Trek ventures. While the appearance of the original cast did not make sense in it, Abrams managed to weave in Nimoy’s Spock into the storyline.

When Spock appears in the Star Trek movie, he is presented as himself from The Original Series, making it seem like when the Kelvin timeline characters get older they would appear similar to their prime universe counterparts.

Can Discovery members exist in the Star Trek Kelvin timeline?

Michael Burnham (played by Sonequa Martin-Green) is the adoptive sister of Mr. Spock in the prime universe, but there is no mention of her with respect to Kelvin timeline Spock. In Season 3 of Discovery, there is a reference to the Kelvin timeline as well.

In the episode titled ‘Terra Firma’, it is confirmed that the Federation knows about the existence of Kelvin Timeline, when Federation officer Kovich (played by David Cronenberg) explains to Dr. Hugh Culber (played by Wilson Cruz) that there was a Starfleet officer who travelled through parallel universe and even to an alternate reality created by the temporal incursions of a Romulan mining ship. This is a reference to Nero, the villain from the 2009 Star Trek movie.

It is not known if the other characters from the show exist in Kelvin Universe. But as per the timeline, hypothetically, the events of Star Trek movies take place at the same time as when Burnham and crew are traveling through the galaxy.

Since the prime and the Kelvin universe are aware of the existence of each other, there is a possibility of a crossover. That said, with Nimoy’s appearance in the movie, it looks highly unlikely that Discovery cast will venture into the timeline as they will have completely different storyline, and casting would need a do-over.
