Episode 8 of Landman season 2 opens with the new year, and for the first time in a long while, Tommy Norris is trying something radical as he is attempting to enjoy his life.

Fresh off his father T.L.’s brutal but loving reality check in the previous episode, Tommy starts this hour determined to do things differently. Between the offshore drilling lawsuit, Danny Morrell’s dangerous financing, and growing tension with Cami Miller, Tommy’s problems have not magically disappeared just because the calendar flipped.

One of his first moves is that he recruits a stripper to help with T.L.’s physical therapy, fully aware that his stubborn father will only cooperate if charm is involved. It is funny, a little absurd, and quietly tender. Tommy is trying to take care of his family while he still can.

At work, the offshore drilling crisis finally comes to a head. Faced with a brutal choice between a costly well with only a ten percent chance of success or a lawsuit that could bleed M-Tex dry, Tommy chooses pragmatism. He then brings in Cooper to push for a settlement, accepting the fact of a loss being a loss, even if it's less damaging. It's a major shift for a man who relies solely on instinct and luck. However, Tommy learns that Danny’s loan is secured against royalty payments, meaning if the well fails, M-Tex is essentially finished. Danny profits either way but the company does not.

The episode ends with Tommy coming home, eating hotdogs and watching his father float in therapy while accepting that he did his best. It would be interesting to see what turn his arc now takes, with only two episodes, to go, but if there's anything we have learned from the show, it's that the oil business has never cared about good intentions.
