Her interest and love for acting was ignited when she watched She Stoops to Conquer at the York Theatre. Janet McTeer has even worked as a waitress, where she served none other than Gary Oldman. He boosted her morale and encouraged her to apply to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA). And the rest is history!

But, little do they know that the night would be far from normal. The chef reveals his shocking surprises for the night and that turns the luxurious night into a sinister one.

Janet McTeer plays one of the elite guests in the movie. She plays a renowned food critic whose reviews make or break restaurants. Her presence in the movie is complemented by her sharp words and intensity. McTeer proves to be an intriguing part of the spine-chilling story.


Ozark

Ozark needs no introduction. This gripping crime drama series on Netflix is about a couple, Marty and Wendy Byrde. They relocate with their kids to the Lake of the Ozarks so that they can continue to launder money for a powerful Mexican drug cartel. However, they soon find themselves entangled in a web of powerful and dangerous locals.

Janet McTeer plays Helen Pierce in Ozark. She is an intimidating attorney who represents the Navarro cartel. She is calculating and commanding with an absolute no-nonsense attitude and that can be seen clearly with her on-screen presence and the way she uses her body language to deliver her performances throughout the series.

Me Before You is a romantic drama that is based on the novel by Jojo Moyes. It is an emotionally deep movie, directed by Thea Sharrock. It is about Louisa "Lou" Clark, who is hired to care for a banker who, after an accident, becomes paralyzed.

Will, the banker, is cold towards her in the beginning. He finds it difficult to cope up with his new reality. However, Lou is a cheerful and bubbly girl who manages to melt Will’s rock solid exterior and they end up forming a deep bond.

Lou gets to know that Will is planning to go to Switzerland to seek assisted suicide. This disturbs Lou, after which she pledges and makes it her goal to get him to change his mind. Her plan is to show Will that despite all odds, no matter what situations arise, life is beautiful and worth living.

Janet McTeer plays Will’s mother, Camilla Traynor. She plays an affectionate mother who has no other wish than to see her son healthy, lively and happy. She desperately hopes Lou can save her son.


The Old Man

This drama-thriller series is based on the novel by Thomas Perry. The series is developed by Jonathan E. Steinberg and Robert Levine. It premiered on June 16, 2022, on FX.

It is about a former CIA operative who has been living off-the-grid for years. But when one day, an intruder breaks into his home, he kills him and is forced to go on the run. This is followed by the FBI trying to track him down and eliminate him.

In The Old Man, McTeer plays a mystery woman named Marion. As expected, she adds a layer of intrigue and depth to the storyline, keeping viewers glued to their screens. Hera in KAOS shares some similarities with The Old Man’s Marion. Watch this series to know what they are.


Tumbleweeds

Tumbleweeds is a 1999 comedy-drama movie that’s directed by Gavin O'Connor and co-written with his then-wife, Angela Shelton. It is based on Shelton’s childhood experiences. The film has Janet McTeer in the lead role as Mary Jo Walker. She is a single mom, who instinctively hits the road with her pre-teen daughter, Ava, when faced with problems.

The movie begins with Mary Jo seen in an argument and she then packs up their lives in order to start fresh. After a failed reunion with one of her old flames, they head towards the west to see the Pacific Ocean.

These new experiences are fun and exciting for both of them, but when Ava lands the lead role in a school play, tensions rise at home. This is when Mary Jo realizes that it might be time to find some sense of stability and start rebuilding their lives with a stable mindset. Also, this role earned McTeer an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress.


Jessica Jones

Created by Melissa Rosenberg, Jessica Jones is a Marvel Netflix series. The story is about a private investigator who was formerly a superhero. After she got manipulated by Kilgrave into killing someone, Jessica gave up her superhero career and now runs 'Alias Investigations'. But, Kilgrave returns and Jessica must face him again to take him down.

She believed her mother to be dead throughout season one of the show. However, in season two, she gets to know that her mother is alive. Janet McTeer takes on the role of Jessica’s mother, Alisa Jones.

Her character is a complex one with a difficult past and superhuman abilities. A character like this isn’t easy to pin down as there is both power, as well as vulnerability in the role.

McTeer’s Alisa Jones definitely adds more depth to the drama. Also, you might find Hera’s character of a God in KAOS to be a bit similar to Alisa Jones’ superhero character.


Into the Storm

This movie is a 2009 biographical account about Winston Churchill's leadership during World War II. Directed by Thaddeus O'Sullivan, it features Brendan Gleeson as Churchill.

The plot begins with a holiday that Churchill takes with his wife, Clementine ("Clemmie"), played by Janet McTeer. Meanwhile, they are also waiting for the 1945 general election results. The movie uses flashbacks to show Churchill reflecting on his struggles with the government and his determination to stand against the Nazis.

We not only get a feel of Churchill's leadership in the movie, but we also realize the toll the war took on his marriage. Janet McTeer plays a supporting wife who balances both public and personal life.


The Governor

This ITV drama series was created by Lynda La Plante and stars Janet McTeer as Helen Hewitt. She is the first woman appointed to run the maximum-security Barfield Prison. The prison has seen riots as well as a death.

This hostile environment prompts Helen not just to tackle the criminals, drug addicts, and the mentally disturbed, but also the male-dominated staff.

Helen is determined to clean up Barfield, but she is also compassionate. McTeer portrays a powerful character who is not afraid of conspiracies, prejudices, or manipulation from the higher people at play. This powerful role resonates with McTeer’s strong portrayal of Hera in KAOS.


Sorry for Your Loss

This one is a heartfelt drama series that first aired on Facebook Watch on September 18, 2018. The show is about a widow, who has to start her life from scratch after her husband’s sudden death.

It touches on grief, loss, and the challenges one faces with moving forward in life. It also shows how the family of the person experiencing the loss face hardships.

The lead character is Leigh (Elizabeth Olsen) and McTeer plays her mother. She runs a fitness studio called Beautiful Beast. McTeer’s versatility as an actress shines through in her performance in this show.

Her portrayal is tender as a mother who tries to support her daughter through the devastating pain, while she struggles with her own problems.


Wuthering Heights

This 1992 movie is an adaptation of Emily Brontë's classic novel. It is directed by Peter Kosminsky, and features Ralph Fiennes, yes you guessed it right, "Voldemort" from the Harry Potter saga.

The story is about the passionate romantic connection between a wild girl from the moors, Catherine Earnshaw, and the orphaned boy her father adopts, Heathcliff.

After the passing of her father, Heathcliff is treated poorly by Catherine’s brother. He makes him a servant. Despite it all, their love does not weaken. But, the story takes an unexpected turn when Catherine dies and Heathcliff is shattered beyond any fix. He longs for her spirit to haunt him. Janet McTeer plays the role of Nelly Dean in Wuthering Heights, as the narrator of this tale.
