Rebecca Yarros’ bestselling romantic fantasy novel, Fourth Wing, is being adapted into a series by Amazon MGM Studios. Originally, Moira Walley-Beckett, known for Breaking Bad and Anne with an E, was set to adapt the project and serve as the showrunner. She joined the project in July 2023; however, reports say she will no longer be part of it.
Another major name added to the project is Jac Schaeffer, known for creating WandaVision and Agatha All Along. She has signed an overall deal with Amazon MGM Studios, Deadline reported. She is now being considered for the series Fourth Wing, in which she will serve as writer, executive producer, and showrunner, sources told Deadline. Although there has been no official confirmation, reports indicate that Schaeffer is a top contender.
Jac Schaeffer could be the new showrunner of Fourth Wing after Moira Walley's exit

The show combines romance with dragons and military academies. Schaeffer's reported involvement suggests Amazon is aiming for higher production value and cinematic storytelling this time. Amazon MGM Studios holds the rights to The Empyrean book series by Rebecca Yarros.
The original production partners include Michael B. Jordan’s Outlier Society and Premediated Productions. While some new names have been added, Kilter Films, run by Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, has now joined as producers. Kilter Films is known for Fallout, Westworld, and The Peripheral. This significantly increases the adaptation’s scale and quality of storytelling.
Jac Schaeffer's work suggests a strong list of genre-rich, character-driven storytelling, which also aligns with the tone of Fourth Wing.
What else do we know about the show Fourth Wing?
Fourth Wing is currently in the early stages of development and follows Violet Sorrengail, a 20-year-old who is reluctantly forced by her war-hero mother to give up her quiet life as a Scribe and instead train as a dragon rider at Basgiath War College. The school operates under a ruthless "Graduate or Die" philosophy.
In the books, Violet Sorrengail enters the brutal Basgiath War College and initially relies on her childhood friend Dain Aetos for support. However, she is also drawn to the intense and enigmatic Xaden Riorson, who seems to watch her closely. Violet lives with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS), a real-life connective tissue disorder that author Rebecca Yarros also has, adding authenticity and depth to Violet’s physical struggles and resilience throughout the story.
The book was a commercial success, spending 88 weeks on the New York Times Bestseller list. The book already has a fan base, and the show would serve to attract more new viewers to the target audience as well.
