An exclusive report by Deadline has revealed that The Wheel of Time will not be renewed for a fourth season. A surprising move by Amazon Prime Video, the streaming giant has decided to cancel the fantasy TV series almost a month after its Season 3 finale (April 17).
Based on the book series by Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson, The Wheel of Time was created by Rafe Judkins and co-produced by Sony Pictures TV and Amazon MGM Studios.
While the series had a tumultuous two seasons, fans praised the storytelling in the recently released third season, achieving the highest score of 97% on Rotten Tomatoes, compared to Season 1 (81%) and Season 2 (86%).
Despite fans praising the creative visuals and performances in the third season, the series failed to survive in the demanding economic environment and the numbers could not justify the cost needed to make a fantasy show of its calibre.
More on this in our story.
The Wheel of Time was cancelled by Prime Video after Season 3
While The Wheel of Time was envisioned as an epic saga similar in stature to HBO's Game of Thrones, it failed to capture its audience like the OG fantasy series.
While the show thrust Prime Video into the fantasy genre alongside The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, it was still not enough to justify the high budgets spent on its making.
Despite fans and critics believing that The Wheel of Time Season 3 was much better in storytelling than the previous seasons, it dropped out of Nielsen’s Top 10 Originals chart just after three weeks.
While the previous two seasons maintained their respective positions throughout their run, Season 3 slipped away just after a few weeks.
In addition, since the fantasy epic series is a global project, it ranked on Prime Video's Top 10 charts in many countries. However, Season 3's numbers still could not justify the cost of making a show as grand as Jordan's series. Prime Video was already in talks with Sony TV, and The Wheel of Time Season 3 numbers proved that the streamer could not continue the show for another season.
While the series was just starting to expand on the magical universe created in Jordan's book series, it will not return with another season. It was also reported that the writers had a cancellation possibility in mind, which is why the Season 3 finale was written to provide some closure to the show's loyal fan base.
Despite these efforts, the show's fans are bound to get upset with the news of its cancellation. The fantasy drama series was beginning to expand on Rand al'Thor's lore, and actor Josha Stradowski surely had the acting chops for the role.
The show also stars Rosamund Pike as the magnificent Moiraine Damodred, who is already a household name. While fans would have liked to see The Wheel of Time expand to many seasons like Jordan's book series, Prime Video's decision set the series' future in stone.
