The name Matlock brings back memories of courtroom drama and classic TV charm. But the 2024 reboot of Matlock is anything but old-fashioned. It takes the heart of the original show and gives it a fresh twist, and in Episode 17, it completely flips the script.

You might go in expecting a comfy legal drama, but this version of Matlock has more secrets, more tension, and definitely more emotional depth than you’d think. It's sharp, modern, and full of unexpected turns.

The emotional fallout is real. And for the first time, Olympia questions everything she thought she knew. Episode 17 isn’t just a turning point — it’s a pressure cooker. And both actresses rise to the occasion.

For the first time, we see things through Olympia’s eyes as she tries to understand Matty’s lies and her reasons for hiding the truth. The emotion, tension, and growth between the two women make this one of the strongest episodes yet. By the end, it’s clear they might actually become “allies in the viper’s nest,” as Matty says.

Olympia confronts Matty at a bus stop and takes her back to the office, where she searches her, finds a hidden burner phone, and takes her laptop. She makes Matty write down every lie she’s told since joining the firm. Olympia is furious and heartbroken, but also trying to protect herself.

Meanwhile, a pregnant client named Amy shows up needing urgent help. Olympia takes charge, assigning Billy and Sarah to the case and covering for Matty, saying she’s at home resting. But behind the scenes, Olympia is still reading through Matty’s confessions. She discovers Matty’s husband is alive and hears him speak about Olympia kindly, which changes something in her.

Matty finally tells Olympia the full truth about her secret mission: she’s been trying to find out who covered up a dangerous drug study at the firm. She promises to protect Olympia’s name if she helps with one final piece of the puzzle. Eventually, Olympia starts to believe her, and they go together to Matty’s home, where her husband and grandson welcome them.

At first, Olympia comes off as cold and strict. But as the season goes on, we learn she’s more than just a tough boss. She’s a mother, an ex-wife, and a junior partner in the law firm — someone who constantly has to prove herself. Even in scenes without any dialogue, Marshall steals the show.

In one moment, Olympia notices a teddy bear on a colleague’s desk that reminds her of something personal, and though she’s clearly annoyed, she quickly regains her calm. Later, when her ex-father-in-law (played by Beau Bridges) surprises her in her office, she hesitates but then walks in strong. These moments show just how deep Olympia’s character is.

The real magic of Matlock is in the bond between Matty and Olympia. They come from different worlds, in age, background, and experience, but those differences make their connection even stronger. Watching their friendship grow is one of the show’s most emotional journeys.

Kathy Bates shares the screen with many characters, from fun scenes with coworkers Billy and Sarah, to sweet ones with her grandson Alfie, and heartbreaking moments with her husband Edwin.

But it’s the scenes with Olympia where Bates truly shines. From dancing after a courtroom win to late-night talks about leaving the firm, their dynamic is powerful and full of feeling.
