Jeopardy! Season 41's October 14, 2024 episode featured Eamonn Campbell, Caryn Radick, and Jack Swansey competing against each other. Initially, Jack was leading the game, but soon, things took a turn, and Swansey was the lead player toward the Double Jeopardy!
Although Swansey is the leading contestant, Campbell leads the Final Jeopardy! While Campbell led with $14,800, the other contestants were Swansey at $14,600 and Radick at $4,600.
Later on the show, during Final Jeopardy!, there was a clue under "Corporate Mascots" which read,
"A 2014 tweet said that this mascot was the 'embodiment of a milkshake of taste bud."
The correct answer was "Grimace," Campbell and Radick got it right. However, what caught the fans' attention was the clue about the "milkshake."
Referring to the clue, some Jeopardy! fans took to Reddit boards and shared their views on it.
A Reddit user, david-saint-hubbins wrote,
"Based on this Mental Floss article, it sounds like the content of this FJ is essentially a retcon that arose out of a random quote from a McDonald's manager and then a couple of vaguely supportive posts from the official McDonald's twitter account."
The comment continued quite long as the user shared how a "random quote" featuring on the show was something he was not a "fan" of.
David-saint-hubbins's comment continued further,
"This FJ feels to me like the writers wanted to do a clue about the Grimace TikTok trend from last year, but couldn't make it about that, so they googled "McDonald's Grimace trivia" and wrote a clue based on the first couple of hits. I'm amazed 2 out of 3 players got it."
The same user added,
"As a rule, I'm not a fan of any FJs that are primarily based on tweets."
Additional comments on the question also shared similar views from multiple Reddit users. To its reply, KingOfIdofront wrote,
"I'm shocked anyone got it. Probably would've guessed it just based on the Grimace Shake trend."
In another reply to that thread, GraticuleBorgnine shared,
"My wife and kid got it immediately. Apparently they'd googled it recently."
Another fan on the same Reddit discussion NikeTaylorScott shared,
"A reference to a "2014 tweet" was weird. Made it seem like it was a new mascot when it was a really old one. Not aware of the TikTok trend you mentioned but Grimace was always THE milkshake mascot as far as I knew, being a tastebud was never part of his lore/ trivia from since my childhood."
One more fan CSerpentine, shared,
"I never saw anything official about him representing a shake but I came to that conclusion quite young."
Another Reddit user, transit-mappr wrote,
"For what it's worth, although it doesn't say Grimace is the "embodiment of a milkshake", the 1992 Ronald McDonald and Friends specification manual states that Grimace is "absolutely crazy about milkshakes". Don't even ask me how I'm even remotely familiar with the existence of this reference."
One more Reddit fan eclecticmom shared,
"The Jeopardy writers seem to like dubiously-sourced mascot-name retcons like this. I recall a clue about the Pringles mascot's first name ("Julius") and one about the "names" of Tetris blocks ("Orange Ricky", "Smashboy")"
Another Reddit user opened up about the October 14 episode of Jeopardy!, where sonicparadigm wrote,
"The final jeopardy was almost the "dankey kang" meme but backwards."
Jeopardy! fans share their views on "random quotes" used as "clues"
The recent October 14, 2024, trivia episode of Jeopardy! featured three contestants participating against each other. They were:
- Eamonn Campbell (Lawyer): From Manchester, Vermont,
- Caryn Radick (Archivist): From Kendall Park, New Jersey, and
- Jack Swansey (Writer): From Durham, North Carolina.
For the Final Jeopardy!, the question that many fans discussed on Reddit was answered correctly by only two players: Campbell and Radick.
The clue/ question in the said episode was, "A 2014 tweet said that this mascot was the 'embodiment of a milkshake of taste bud" had the correct answer: "Grimace," which became a topic of discussion among the fans.
While some Reddit users mentioned they were not "fans" of such tweets being used as clues, others thought the reference to an old Tweet from 2014 was "weird." Many of the Jeopardy! fans took to Reddit boards to share their views on the question and its references.
Fans can stream Jeopardy! on weekdays at 7 pm ET through their regional network channels.
