The Last of Us Season 2 finale had several shocking moments. One of those came right in the concluding minutes of the seventh episode of this season, when instead of following up on Abby pointing the gun at Ellie and pulling the trigger, the scene shifts to Abby in the fictional SoundView Stadium three days before the events of this finale.
This scene sets up the third season, which will be from Abby's perspective. This is how things play out in The Last of Us Part II, the game that this season is based on as well. Thus, the closing minutes of The Last of Us Season 2 are setting up the change in the perspective from Ellie to Abby.
"Amid the battle between Seattle's warring factions, Ellie's search draws her toward a devastating confrontation."
What is the meaning behind The Last of Us Season 2 Episode 7's 'Day One' scene?

The Last of Us Season 2 episodes 4, 5, and 7 unfold over the period of three days in the HBO series' timeline. The sixth episode, "The Price", was a flashback entry that revealed the reason why Ellie and Joel's relationship was strained in the first episode of Season 2. So, the closing minutes of the seventh episode go back to the events of the fourth one, "Day One".
But this time, instead of following Ellie and Dina, this scene is from Abby's perspective, who is called for a meeting with Jeffrey Wright's Isaac Dixon. She first walks out of the room and looks at the field where the wolves are preparing for something mysterious. After that, the curtain falls on The Last of Us Season 2.
Season 3 might be focused primarily on Abby's perspective:
Right before the concluding minutes of the seventh episode of The Last of Us Season 2, Abby had broken into Tommy, Jesse, Dina, and Ellie's hideout and shot Jesse. After that, she points the gun at Ellie and pulls the trigger, but the screen goes black. Thus, for now, we don't know who the bullet hit. After the screen goes black, we are back to the fourth episode of this season, but from Abby's perspective.
The people involved in the show addressed season 3 during a press conference held on May 23, 2025, in relation to The Last of Us Season 2 finale. The first one to address this was Craig Mazin, one of the showrunners:
“Even if I thought I knew now exactly how it was going to go, I’m experienced enough to know that two weeks from now we may have a different idea of how it should go. All I can say is we haven’t seen the last of Kaitlyn Dever and we haven’t seen the last of Bella Ramsey, and we haven’t seen the last of Isabela Merced, and we haven’t seen the last of a lot of people who are currently dead in the story.”
Neil Druckmann, the co-showrunner of The Last of Us Season 2, who also worked on the games, added this to Mazin's quote:
“Whether you will see them on screen or not, their presence will be there throughout.”
Bella Ramsey, however, in a Variety interview, confirmed that their role (Ramsey uses they/them pronouns) in The Last of Us Season 3 might be smaller. They said:
“I haven’t seen any scripts, but yes, I do expect that. I think that I’m going to be there, but not a whole bunch. We’ve had conversations about that. I sort of have a rough idea of what it’s going to be, but I can’t tell you.”
