Apple TV's crime thriller series Slow Horses, which premiered in April 2022, went on to become a breakout hit and won the Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series in 2024.
Starring Gary Oldman, Jack Lowden, Kristin Scott Thomas and Jonathan Pryce in the main roles, the show follows an administrative purgatory called Slough House, where misfit MI5 officers are sent after they fail a task.

The misfit officers are led by their cold and abusive boss Jackson Lamb, who anticipates that they will leave out of boredom with their dull lives.
However, when River Cartwright, a MI5 officer, is shifted to Slough House, the Slow Horses become embroiled in high-stakes missions, ranging from high-profile hostages, KGB conspiracies to dark family secrets.
The show concluded with a highly successful Season 4 in October 2024, and will return with the next chapter on September 24, 2025.
Here are the high points from Slow Horses, Seasons 1 to 4.
From high-stakes kidnapping to Russian oligarch: Slow Horses prove their worth
Slow Horses Season 1 begins with MI5 agent River Cartwright being demoted to Slough House after he fails at an important training session, which theoretically killed many people.
While he struggles with the dull life at Slough House and itches to prove his worth, his boss Jackson Lamb tasks him to keep track of a right-wing freelance journalist. Jackson's team is also assigned to rescue a young Muslim boy, Hasan, who was kidnapped by right-wing groups.
However, Lamb realises that Diana Taverner has assigned Hasan's case to his team with an ulterior motive. His team manages to split up and gather intel on her, which they then threaten to leak. The season ends with the revelation that Catherine's boss was actually killed by Lamb and not by suicide as the people seem to believe.
The Slow Horses become entangled in an even twistier plot in Season 2, when an old acquaintance to Jackson and MI5's former agent Dickie Bow mysteriously dies on the bus. Since Lamb is not convinced that this was a mere accident, he sends Min and Louisa for sleuthing.
They eventually find that Bowie's death was somehow related to Arkady Pashkin, a shady Russian oligarch, who is planning a high-stakes assassination at the summit, which will lead to political conflict.
While Lamb and his team manage to defeat Pashkin just in time, the group becomes successful in killing Min and stages it as an accident.
Slow Horses Season 4 saw River Cartwright's family secret come to light
After spending Slow Horses Season 3 in shadows, the latest season shed some light on River Cartwright and his long-kept family secret. The season also introduced Frank Harkness, a black-ops mercenary, who turns out to be River's biological father.
While David Cartwright's life is in mortal danger, Harkness's connection with the Cartwright family is revealed. River learns that his father, Frank, impregnated many women at Les Arbres to breed his army of soldiers-turned-mercenaries. River's mother, Isobel, was one of the many women, and Frank returned to ask River to join him.
While he tries to brainwash River into joining him and tries to persuade him about the menial Slow Horses job, River doesn't budge. When he is taken hostage by Frank, Louisa and other team members show up at the right moment and Frank is taken into custody. However, he reveals that he still has insurance and if he is taken into custody, the MI5's connections to his assassins will be leaked publicly.
Elsewhere, Patrice, River's half-brother, learns about David's location in Slough House and launches an attack, with only Marcus and Coe adequately armed to fight him. Louisa, Lamb and Catherine do their best to take cover and save an injured David and Roddy, but Marcus tragically dies while saving his team from Patrice, who is eventually killed by Coe in revenge.
Since Frank revealed his biggest truck and likely survived, he might return in Slow Horses Season 5, which would create further problems for River and Jackson. In addition, the failed operations inside the MI5 would likely add another layer of tension between them and Slough House agents.
