Lanterns, which is still under production, received a major update this week, with rumor suggesting the show could adapt the death of Hal's father. The buzz spread after Nexus Point News, an entertainment portal, exclusively revealed this week that the makers of the HBO series were looking to cast actors to play the younger versions of Jessica and Martin Jordan, or Hal's parents.

For those unversed, Martin Jordan is an Air Force pilot, and young Hal's hero and role model. However, Martin dies in a crash while testing a plane, an event which young Hal witnessed. Despite this traumatic past, Hal would go on to become a test pilot like his father for the Air Force. If the rumors are indeed true, HBO's Lanterns is adapting this storyline for this show.

Explaining the latest Lanterns rumor

Nexus Point News this week revealed that the makers of the HBO DCU superhero show, Lanterns, are looking to cast three characters: A young boy for the role of Hal Jordan as the child who will witness his father's death, a middle-aged male actor for the role of Martin Jordan, and a female actor for the role of Hal's mother, Jessica.

The report suggets Hal's mother almost becomes devoid of emotions after Martin passes away.

Who stars in Lanterns?

HBO's Lanterns features an impressive cast. Aaron Pierre appears as the young Green Lantern Corps recruit John Stewart, and Kyle Chandler as the human Green Lantern legend Hal Jordan, who will probably serve as John's mentor. Apart from them, Nathan Fillion also reprises the role of Green Lantern Guy Gardner.

Other than three Green Lanterns, the HBO series' supporting cast includes Poorna Jagannathan as Zoe, Garret Dillahunt as William Macon, Jason Ritter as Billy Macon, and Ulrich Thomsen as Sinestro. Speaking of the script, Poorna Jagannathan told Collider in a January 2025 interview:

“This is the first script that I’ve read that I understand why there’s an NDA. Everything is so insane. It is the best writing that I have ever read. I don’t know anything about sci-fi, and I don’t care, actually. But this script makes sci-fi seem like my world. It makes it so accessible to me. I understand everything about this world even though I don’t understand this world. So it’s the best sci-fi script I’ve ever read.”

What is the HBO series about?

Unlike the CW DC shows, the HBO series could be a True Detective-style murder mystery. Based on the official logline, it seems that the series is set in a small American town that has been the site of a mysterious murder:

"The series follows new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan, two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland."

The HBO series is still under production, with an expected release window of early 2026.
