The upcoming Harry Potter TV show on HBO is slated to be the biggest release in recent times. As anticipation grows feverish over the impending television adaptation, HBO recently confirmed six cast members who will appear on the Harry Potter television show. The official statement reads:

"Exploring every corner of the wizarding world, each season will bring Harry Potter and its incredible adventures to new and existing audiences and will stream exclusively on Max where it’s available globally...The original, classic, and cherished films will remain at the core of the franchise and available to watch around the world."

The Harry Potter TV show is expected to be a downright faithful adaptation of the J.K. Rowling source material. Here's everything that we know.

Who is in the cast of HBO's Harry Potter TV show?

Francesca Gardiner and Mark Mylod are the showrunners and executive producers of the Harry Potter TV show, with Mylod doubling up as a director for multiple episodes. The statement made by Gardiner and Mylod read:

"We are happy to announce the casting of John Lithgow, Janet McTeer, Paapa Essiedu, Nick Frost, Luke Thallon and Paul Whitehouse to play Dumbledore, McGonagall, Snape, Hagrid, Quirrell and Filch. We’re delighted to have such extraordinary talent onboard, and we can’t wait to see them bring these beloved characters to new life."

As mentioned, John Lithgow will be appearing on the upcoming show as Albus Dumbledore. He previously raked in positive reviews for his role on The Crown. On the other hand, Janet McTeer of The White Queen and Tumbleweeds fame will be portraying Minerva McGonagall. Papa Essiedu, is known for his work in titles like Gangs of London and I May Destroy You will portray the fan-favorite character of Severus Snape.

Nick Frost will play Rubeus Hagrid and it can be expected that the Shaun of the Dead star will bring his formidable acting chops to the table. In addition to these cast members, Paul Whitehouse will be seen as Argus Filch and Luke Thallon as Quirinus Quirrell.

Despite HBO confirming this cast, the actors portraying the leading characters of Harry, Hermione, and Ron are yet to be officially confirmed. HBO previously launched a large-scale open casting call which gathered a total of more than 30,000 applications. In this regard, Mylod has commented:

"We haven’t made any final choices, but we’re workshopping with a shortlist in January. And there are some crackers. The cream of British acting talent, this incredible tradition of brilliant theater actors, and of course, we’re following the books with canonical casting."

Where does the TV show figure in the larger scheme of things?

While the world of the teen wizard has already been exhaustively explored throughout the film series, the upcoming HBO TV show aims to be a faithful adaptation of the literary material, using the books as a base to build its world. HBO had previously released a statement that read:

"The series will be a faithful adaptation of the beloved Harry Potter book series by author and executive producer J.K. Rowling and will feature an exciting and talented cast to lead a new generation of fandom, full of the fantastic detail and much-loved characters Harry Potter fans have adored for over 25 years."

There isn't a potential release date for the show as of now.
