Ben Warren’s story in Grey's Anatomy has been quite different from most characters. He didn’t stick to one job. He started as an anesthesiologist at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital, then left to become a firefighter on the spinoff show Station 19, and now, in Season 21, he’s back at the hospital training to become a surgeon again.
But here’s the thing: even though Ben has had such an interesting and unique journey, Grey's Anatomy Season 21 didn’t do justice to his character. Fans were excited to see how he’s grown, especially after spending seven seasons as a firefighter, but the show didn’t explore that properly.
It felt like there was a lot more to say about Ben, but they just didn’t go deep enough. Now that Station 19 has ended, there’s a sense that Ben’s story is still incomplete. In Season 21, instead of focusing on his growth as a surgeon, Ben mostly got caught up in side plots and drama.
Grey's Anatomy Season 21 misfired on Ben Warren
After watching Jason Winston George return in Grey's Anatomy Season 21, I believe the show hasn't focused on Ben's growth as a doctor so far. He came back to Grey Sloan, first helping out at Bailey’s clinic, then getting a spot as a temporary surgical resident.
But even after all that, we didn’t really see him improving or learning much as a surgeon. Fans might have noticed that other interns were moving forward, getting better at surgeries, becoming more confident, and even leading in some situations.
But with Ben, it felt like he was stuck in the same place. Though Ben helped in a few surgeries and emergencies in Grey's Anatomy Season 21, he didn’t have that big moment of growth that other characters got.
Part of the reason Ben’s story didn’t shine is that it got lost in all the relationship drama. His tension with Teddy and the awkward dynamic of working under his wife, Bailey, took up more screen time.
Instead of focusing on his journey of switching careers and starting over, the show turned it into more of a personal drama. Season 21 had a real chance to explore that big life change, but it just didn’t take it.

Grey's Anatomy still has a chance to improve Ben's arc through season 22

The good news is that Ben i starting over and that there is still a lot of hope for growth in his story. He is no longer embroiled in the typical hospital drama because Teddy didn't back him, and Bailey didn't want to come across as prejudiced.
Ben may then attempt to apply to a different residency program or even return to Grey Sloan, but in a more impartial and self-sufficient manner. Without the additional pressure, it's an opportunity for him to truly concentrate on his career in season 22.
Jason George, who plays Ben, said that coming back to Grey’s Anatomy felt like returning to your parents’ home. Familiar, but with room to grow. He mentioned that Ben’s firefighter confidence could help him in medical training, or it could hold him back. So, season 22 might use his skills to offer a better story arc.
