Grantchester Season 10 Episode 8 recap: Explosion happens at Wilbur Church’s speech and Alphy finds new information about his mother

Grantchester Season 10 Episode 8 premiered on August 3, 2025, and marked the end of this season. The official synopsis of the episode, as mentioned by PBS, reads,

“Alphy and Geordie keep an eye on rising tensions as a controversial figure is invited to speak at the university. When a murder is committed, however, they disagree on how to approach the case.”

The storyline also involves Alphy finding new information about her mother and eventually deciding to follow it. Let us now explore in detail what happens in Grantchester Season 10 Episode 8.

A deadly explosion happens at Wilbur Church’s speech in Grantchester Season 10 Episode 8

Geordie and Alphy resolve their previous conflict in Grantchester Season 10 Episode 8 and when they come to know that Wilbur Church, the fascist leader, is coming for a speech at the university, all their attention gets shifted to that. There is much commotion before Wilbur's arrival as the students protest and a Union Jack is also burnt.

One of the students, Simeon Jones, who is also a poetry writer, gets highlighted as a protester and also has the history of sending threatening letters to Wilbur. Finally, the leader arrives with his wife and son, Maude and Julian, respectively. Wilbur’s bodyguard Eddie is also with them.

After Wilbur arrives, a huge explosion happens, which leaves Maude dead. Eddie mentions he had received a package and without checking it properly, he handed it over to Maude, which ultimately resulted in the explosion.

As Simeon’s handwriting is found on the note on the package, he is caught, but Simeon claims that someone could have pasted it from the threatening letter he had sent to Wilbur. Eventually, it comes to light that it was Wilbur himself who caused the explosion. Alphy makes the discovery and while Wilbur tried to set off another bomb on the stage, thankfully it was already deactivated by Larry.

Alphy decides to find his mother in Grantchester Season 10 Episode 8

In the final episode of Grantchester Season 10, Larry and Miss Scott tell Alphy that Geordie had been trying really hard to gather more information about Alphy’s mother. It has already been established that the two had a fight over Geordie going behind Alphy’s back to try and find information about his mother, but Alphy gets over it, as is shown in this episode.

Moreover, as the episode draws to a close, Alphy decides to go to the address that Geordie had found and which is apparently where Alphy’s mother resides. The next season is very likely to deal with this plotline and focus on whether Alphy finds his mother or not and what happens next.
