Golden Globes 2026 came in hot, and boy, was it full of those “wait… WHAT just happened?” moments that make award nights way more fun than boring clean sweeps.

From unexpected winners stealing the spotlight to big favorites walking back to their seats with heartbreak written all over their faces, this year’s show had drama written all over it.

In other words, the biggest surprises shook up the awards race, while the snubs sparked serious debate online. And honestly, the chaos and side eye are exactly why people love the Golden Globes.

If you’re here for the tea, the plot twists, and the real headline moments, you’re in the right place.

Wait, THAT didn’t win? The Golden Globes 2026 snubs that had everyone doing a double-take

Let’s start with the moments of the award show that hurt a little while we talk about all of the snubs for the night, snubs that made us go “wait… WHAT just happened? THAT didn’t win??”

1) Ryan Coogler’s Sinners had a whole lot of serious buzz and a big pile of nominations, and it was quite obviously the people's favorite. Fans expected it to dominate the creative categories, but instead, the film won Paul Thomas Anderson both Best Director and Best Screenplay for One Battle After Another.

Ryan Coogler’s Sinners did pick up the Cinematic and Box Office Achievement award and a Best Score win for Ludwig Göransson, but even that music trophy didn’t make the main broadcast, which felt like a quiet letdown for such a massive crowd favorite.

2) Another eyebrow raiser was international darling It Was Just an Accident, missing out on the foreign language win, losing ground to The Secret Agent. Jafar Panahi also didn’t land the directing prize, which added to the feeling that the film’s awards run hit a sudden speed bump at the Golden Globes 2026.

3) On the blockbuster side, Wicked For Good and Avatar Fire and Ash both lost the box office category to Sinners. This surprised people because Avatar was still ruling globally and Wicked (part one) had won the same award last year.

4) Even the TV crowd felt a sting. Sarah Snook was widely expected to win for All Her Fault, but the trophy went elsewhere. And let’s not forget SmartLess missing the brand new podcast award, even though it’s been around for years and has a loyal fan base.

So yeah, the snub list for the Golden Globes 2026 was stacked and honestly, quite confusing at the same.

Plot twists we loved: The surprise wins at the Golden Globes 2026 that changed our mood

Now for the fun part! The wins that actually made the room feel buzzy at the Golden Globes 2026 awards!

1) The biggest jaw dropper of the night came when Chloé Zhao's Hamnet walked away with Best Film Drama. Most people had their money on Sinners, so this win instantly shook up the chatter all around the room.

2) Teyana Taylor pulling off the Best Supporting Actress as Perfidia Beverly Hills in Paul Thomas Anderson's film One Battle After Another, and this was yet another win that was considered a surprise for the night!

With names like Amy Madigan and Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas in the nomination lineup, this category was intense to begin with. Taylor’s performance in One Battle After Another clearly connected with the people who voted for her, and her win kicked off a strong night for the film.

3) Wagner Moura also delivered a shocker by winning Best Actor in a Drama for The Secret Agent, beating out much bigger Hollywood names.

4) On the television side, Michelle Williams surprised many by winning Best Actress in a Limited Series for Dying for Sex, even though predictions leaned toward Sarah Snook.

5) The first-ever podcast award for the Golden Globes 2026 award went to Amy Poehler for Good Hang with Amy Poehler, which brought out multiple mixed reactions due to her show being relatively new.

Golden Globes 2026 didn’t play it completely safe, and that’s why people are still arguing about it online. Some favorites didn’t get their moment to shine, some dark horses stole the spotlight, and a few category choices sparked real debate.

This very push and pull between predictability and surprise is what kept the award night messy and buzzing in the best way possible. Whether you agreed with the wins or not, the night surely did give us plenty of talking points, memes, and group chat debates with our friends.

And honestly, that’s exactly what a good awards show should do.
