CBS's Emmy-winning series, The Big Bang Theory, can be tagged as one of the most popular sitcoms of all time.
Created by Bil Prady and Chuck Lorre, this Jim Parsons starter series first aired in 2007 and has a total of 279 seasons spanning 12 seasons and a spin-off.
The series follows the lives of four socially awkward nerds (Leonard, Raj, Sheldon, and Howard) and their extrovert blonde neighbor Penny, based in Pasadena, California. The show's a perfect blend of science, love, friendship, and personal growth. Each of the episodes is so entertaining and meaningful that it becomes impossible to pick favorites.
However, Johnny Galecki, who plays Leonard Hofstadter in TBBT, an experimental physicist and Sheldon Cooper's flatmate, whose sweet yet complicated relationship with Penny is widely loved, has opened up about his favorites.
In an interview with TBS (via Facebook) in 2021, he opened up about one of the scenes from Season 7, Episode 3, 'The Gorilla Dissolution,' where the show's favorite couple, Penny and Leonard, got engaged. He told TBS,
"I found it heartbreakingly sweet. Leonard quietly carried a ring for God knows how long. For all of his math and science, Leonard was a diehard romantic sentimentalist. It's never more evident than in this episode."
The heartwarming scene brilliantly portrays Leonard and Penny's chaotic yet endearing confession. The scene begins with Leonard comforting Penny after she loses her job. Penny confronts Leonard that she does not need a job to be happy, and when Leonard asks what she needs, Penny replies,
"You, you stupid Pop Tart."
This leaves Leonard a bit shocked as he nervously replies,
"I guess I'm in."
Leonard, who couldn't wrap his head around the fact that Penny had indeed confessed her love, says,
"Just feels a little anti-climatic"
Leonard wastes no time; he takes out a ring from his wallet and gets down on his knees to propose. Penny, who is stunned and excited at the same time, says 'Yes !' and the two share a passionate kiss. Through their conversation, the viewers come to know that Leonard had bought the ring years ago.
Here are some other Leonard moments that Johnny Galecki loved in The Big Bang Theory.
Love, laughter, and Leonard: When Johnny Galecki picked his favorite moments from The Big Bang Theory
Apart from Season 7, Episode 3, 'The Gorilla Dissolution,' Johnny Galecki also picked his remaining favorite scenes of the sitcom. Interestingly, most of the episodes that he mentioned feature his interactions with Penny.
For instance, in Season 3, Episode 19, titled The Wheaton Recurrence, Leonard confesses his love for the first time to Penny. However, the confession does not go as planned; it shocks Penny as she replies, 'Thank you', followed by an awkward conversation between the two. This hurried confession later makes Penny leave in between the high-voltage bowling match between Sheldon and his arch-rival, Wil Wheaton.
Galecki told TBS that this heartbreaking scene was important for Leonard's character arc to mature in the further seasons.
Adding to the list, Glaecki also mentions Season 6, Episode 8, titled The 43 Peculiarity, where Leonard seems to be jealous of Penny's studymate as he says,
"Everywhere you go, guys hit on you, even if I am standing right there. And everyone is taller than me. Why is everyone taller than me?"
Penny assures that she loves Leonard, and he replies,
"It's the first time you said you love me."
Galecki explained how this was his favorite memory of the live audience and was shot in one take. He also added The Big Bang Theory Season 8 Episode 22, titled 'The Graduation Transmission,' to his list of favorites.
Apart from these, another of Galecki's favorite scenes was from Season 4, Episode 15, when Leonard was left in utter confusion on whether he would sleep with the benefactor Mrs. Latham, played by Jessica Walter, for a Caltech donation.
He told TBS,
"I loved working with Jessica Walter. And that Penny saw a side of Leonard she didn't before know. Or consider."
