The upcoming Netflix series, I Will Find You, which is under production, will be slightly different than the Harlan Coben book it is based on. Worry not, the story stays the same, but there are going to be slight character changes, which will be evident only if you are someone who reads Coben's books very thoroughly.
I Will Find You was created by Coben along with co-creator and showrunner Robert Hull. The show will be following David Burroughs, a man wrongfully convicted of his son, Matthew's murder, who finds out that his son is actually alive and escapes prison to find him. Burroughs will be helped by his ex-wife's sister, Rachel, in finding his son.
Robert Hull told The Hollywood Reporter that the dynamic between David and Rachel and how they both drive the story will be slightly different than in the book.
I Will Find You will slightly differ from the book
I Will Find You is not the first novel by Coben adapted into a Netflix show. Missing You, Just One Look, Fool Me Once, and Caught are some of the Netflix series based on Harlan Coben's Novels. I Will Find You is the latest one to be adapted and will be followed by Run Away.
No parent wishes to live through the death of their child or be accused of killing their child when they are innocent. Unfortunately, both happen to David Burroughs (Sam Worthington), and he is serving his prison sentence when Rachel (Britt Lower) tells him that his son is actually alive. To find his son, David escapes from prison, and the show takes us through the journey of him and Rachel looking for Matthew.
In the book, David and Rachel do work together to look for Matthew, but they don't spend too much time together or have an arc they both share. Robert Hull, co-creator of I Will Find You, executive producer, and showrunner, wanted to do something different. He wanted to ensure both David and Rachel were equally in focus for the show.
Hull told The Hollywood Reporter:
“What I like about their relationship, both in the book and the series, is it’s unique because they’re bonded by both individual tragedy as well as a shared tragedy. It’s sort of two people climbing their way back.”
He also spoke about David's perspective in the book, which will be reflected in the show, saying:
“What I really loved about the book was, unlike a classic fugitive story, which the goal is to clear your name, this really has nothing to do with clearing your name. David doesn’t care if he clears his name; David only cares about finding his son.”
Hull continued:
“So I think the payoff is a lot bigger, and I think in addition to redemption and damaged people healing, the story is really about hope. I think what Harlan did great in the book was take this very dark premise and turn it into a story of hope at the end.”
I Will Find You stars Sam Worthington as David Burroughs, Britt Lower as Rachel Mills, David’s ex sister-in-law, and Milo Ventimiglia as Hayden, Rachel’s ex-boyfriend, who helps David and Rachel. The show also stars Logan Browning as Sarah Greer, Erin Richards as Cheryl Dreason, David’s ex-wife, Jonathan Tucker as Police Sergeant Adam Mackenzie, and Chi McBride as Max Williams.
The executive producers of the show are Coben, Hull, Bryan Wynbrandt, Steven Lilien, and John Weber. Coben is executive producing the show through his company, Final Twist Productions.
Netflix has yet to announce a release date for the show.
