Jake Borelli’s Dr. Levi Schmitt finally bid adieu to Grey's Anatomy in season 21, episode 7. His departure marked the end of an era for the show, as he had been a part of it since season 14.

However, his character’s exit was not shocking as it had been mentioned before season 21’s beginning. Along with his exit, the departure of Midori Francis, who played the role of Mika Yasuda since Grey's Anatomy Season 19, was also announced.

Levi Schmitt was associated with Grey's Anatomy for over eight seasons, and despite initially mainly bringing comic relief to the show with his clumsiness, his character gradually grew to be an impactful component of the show. Levi had a long journey on the show that saw him transforming into a confident resident from a rather clumsy intern; often putting him at the center of Grey's Anatomy episodes.

From exploring his LGBTQA identity to coming out to his people as a Jewish man who is gay, Levi’s character had fulfilling arcs that proved vital to the show’s progression.

Let us explore Levi’s exit from Grey’s Anatomy in detail.

Why did Levi leave in Grey's Anatomy Season 21 Episode 7?

Levi’s departure from Grey’s Anatomy in season 21, episode 7 came as a natural conclusion after considering his plans for the future. Though Levi had chosen pediatrics as his specialty in season 20, his low ABSITE score did not allow him to be a part of the department.

However, he relentlessly pursued Monica Beltran as his mentor, and that eventually proved to be the best decision of his life. Beltran eventually realized that Levi belonged to the pediatrics department and that brought him closer to fulfilling his dream.

Levi got a pediatrics job in Texas with the help of Beltran, and that naturally meant he would have to move there, bringing a natural conclusion to his story arc in Grey’s Anatomy.

Besides finding professional fulfillment, Levi also found his happily ever after with the conclusion of his character. Since the time he met James, they clicked well, and their disagreement on their professional roles as a surgeon and a chaplain could not fade their spark.

Since they both found love unexpectedly, it became an emotional moment when it became clear that besides fulfilling his professional dream in Texas, Levi would be able to do so with the love of his life by his side as Grey's Anatomy Season 21 Episode 7 reveals that James has also resigned from his job.

Regarding his exit from the show, Borelli told The Hollywood Reporter,

“That’s the relationship he’s been wanting for for so long and, even more important, I think staying would have been very easy for Levi. I’m so glad that he chose [to leave] for himself, and then I’m so glad that the pieces fell in place regarding James. That was a big moment for me to see him finally choosing something for himself.”

Is there a possibility of Levi returning to Grey's Anatomy?

Grey's Anatomy has a proven history of bringing back old characters after they have been away for years. If his character returns to the show, it would be great to have a glimpse into the further progression of his character, which has been done so well over the seasons in Grey’s Anatomy.

However, for now, there has not been any official update to bring back Levi’s character.

Grey’s Anatomy can be streamed on Hulu.
