NBC’s Dateline episode titled The End of the Affair details the disappearance and subsequent murder of Florida businessman Camilo Salazar. After an investigation, local businessman Manuel Marin, co-founder of Presidente Supermarket, was convicted of plotting the kidnapping and murder of Camilo Salazar.

Marin, with the help of three other accomplices, Alexis Vila Perdomo, Roberto Isaac, and Ariel Gandulla, reportedly kidnapped, brutally tortured, killed, and burned Camilo in June 2011 after finding out about his affair with Jenny, Marin’s ex-wife. Manuel Marin is currently serving his sentence at Dade Correctional Institute in Homestead, Florida.

More on this in our story.

Dateline: The End Of The Affair - Who is Manuel Marin and what crimes did he commit? Details explored

As per Dateline, Camilo Salazar went missing after leaving his daughter in his wife’s office. His body was later found burning on Okeechobee Road. After medical examination, it was revealed that Camilo’s body had signs of being tortured, which prompted the police to speculate a foul play.

After looking into his personal life, they found out about his secret affair with Jenny Marin, whom Salazar had known since the 2000s when she moved to Florida from New Jersey. Interrogation with Jenny revealed that Camilo and she were in a secret relationship that her husband, Manuel Marin, had recently found out about.

According to the Miami Herald, Marin hired three of his acquaintances to get rid of Salazar. Alexis Vila Perdomo, a former Cuban wrestler, reportedly planned everything on a call from Las Vegas, while the other two men, Ariel Gandulla, a retired MMA fighter, and Roberto Isaac, executed the plan by kidnapping Salazar from near his wife's office, where he had parked his Chevrolet Trailblazer. He was initially taken to Isaac’s home before shifting him to Marin’s blue Mercedes with his hands and feet tied.

Marin and Isaac then took him to an isolated field in West Miami-Dade, where Camilo was reportedly tortured by breaking his jaw, bashing his head, and slitting his throat. They later set fire to the body and left.

Ariel’s fingerprint matched with the one found in Salazar’s car in 2015, but the police couldn’t arrest him as he had fled to Vancouver. In 2019, all four involved in the deadly murder plot were arrested, and three of them were convicted, with Isaac receiving a life sentence for participating in the murder and kidnapping of Camilo, while Vila Perdomo received a 15-year prison sentence.

However, Gandulla only received a three-year prison sentence after he took a plea deal and testified against his accomplices.

As per Dateline, Marin ran away from the US to Spain after Salazar’s murder. With the help of the call records of Marin and the other three men, they were able to charge him with being a part of the murder plot. Furthermore, Gandulla’s and Jenny’s testimony further helped in solidifying the case against Manuel Marin.

Marin was found guilty by a jury, as per a 2023 report by NBC Miami, where he was given a 30-year imprisonment for committing Salazar's murder. And an additional 15 years for conspiring to kidnap and a life sentence for kidnapping Camilo Salazar.

Judge Miguel de la O, who oversaw the trial, told Marin:

"Although you are not convicted of murdering Camilo Salazar you are convicted of setting in motion the events which resulted in his death and of killing him and that too is part of your character."

Salazar’s wife, Daisy Holcombe, also addressed the court and said:

"We didn’t get a chance to say goodbye, we didn't get a minute, we didn't a hug, we didn’t get to tell him he was loved and that he would be missed."

The Dateline episode gives a detailed account of Camilo Salazar’s murder and how the police were able to get all the accused behind bars.
